i keep looking for an answer and i cannot find one....if you litter a game with collectibles that you need in to truly beat it 100%

gamers will feel obligated to hunt every last one of them down like it was their job....why?

sometimes there's no real reason to hunt them down and sometimes the reward is non existent

I'll only do it if I'm still having fun playing the game already. Though sometimes there are so many collectibles that it becomes silly to even bother with 100%. Some MMO's come to mind. The Tales games lately have in-game achievements for using attacks so many times, (weak ones too sometimes) and they can go into the thousands..I love Tales games but to get them all would take like 3-4 playthroughs, and they take over 60 hours a lot of the time..and they're not generally games to enjoy more than two playthroughs on, MAX.
I'm doing it a lot less than I used to, because I work full time and yeah the rewards are shit more often than not.

Gives you something extra to do. Plus collectibles-hunting encourages you to more fully explore the map.

I don't think the majority cares that much about collectibles. They're shoehorned into every game because they're easy content o make, not because everybody pursues them.
