tl;dw: "Socialism is just about sharing and being nice to each other, guys!"

No, no it fuckin isn't. Voluntarily giving out Halloween candy doesn't even approach what Marx described socialism as. Giving out candy is called "charity", which is what the US leads the world in per capita despite being one of the more capitalist countries.

And for that matter, having a handful of government services is also not socialism. England in the 1800's also had roads/firefighters/police/etc, but Marx never called England a socialist society.

Somehow, he had a more appropriate idea of socialism back when he was intentionally acting like a dumbass than he does when he's being his normal liberal self

So is Lil Trump also stupid for comparing Halloween candy to socialism or is it only Colbert?

Taking stuff that someone "worked" for by force and redistributing it to people who did not work for it does approach the idea of socialism.

But giving out money to people voluntarily and in quantities you decided on personally is not how socialism works.

That was a weird deflection

Using halloween candy as an analogy for money isn't the problem, as you tried to imply

The problem is that Colbert (and apparently you) have no idea what socialism even is

This guy is just as stupid as his 16 year old audience. Anybody who thinks socialism is good or that capitalism is bad needs to brush up on history.

There is no individual wealth with socialism. How could people be so selfish that they honestly convince themselves that this is anything but a horrible idea? You don't destabilize a world power because you're too lazy and self centered to work. It's the entitlement of seeing that somebody EARNED something and feeling that you DESERVE it.

This election was a real eye opener for me. I had no idea how many people I know were willing to double down on obamas racist politics and actually say that socialism was the better choice.

I guess I can't expect more from people who tune in to be told how to think by a beta male comedian.

This isn't what I asked, though.

I'm asking why the metaphor doesn't also work for the way we finance government services.

You're saying it's a good metaphor for socialism but doesn't it. also apply to non socialism? If so, how. is it a good metaphor?

How do you figure

Taxes funding public roads is not wealth redistribution as described by Marx, and is therefore not an example of socialism. This isn't terribly complicated

I'm saying that taking candy from someone and giving it to other people is a good metaphor for how taxes work, or at least asking you to explain why it isn't.

You're telling me it isn't, because taxing people for roads, police, etc. aren't socialism.

But I'm not saying they are socialist, I'm saying the example Donald Jr. used also describes non-socialist systems. You are saying it doesn't, because they aren't socialist. That is circular reasoning.

No it isn't, because taxes don't always work that way. When taxes are taken to fund a road, that road is for everyone to use, which is not similar to Trump Jr's tweet. When taxes are taken to give to other people with less money than you, that's a clear facet of socialism, and is obviously what Trump Jr. was referencing.

Need me to be more clear?

Yeah, don't you think you're being overly simplistic in the case of socialism, and relatively sophisticated in the case of general government services?

Wealth redistribution in this manner isn't socialism exactly in the manner Marx described it, either.

We're talking about an analysis of Stephen Colbert being fundamentally wrong on the definition of socialism while entirely skewing point of Jr's < 140-character tweet

And I'm having to explain why no, not all taxation is socialism, nor is it as analogous to Jr's tweet as socialism is.

Of-fucking-course it's gonna get analytical

which you still haven't explained lol
of course not all taxation is equal to taking candy from one person to give to another person, but a substantial portion of taxation in fact works that way

i.e., I pay for fire fighters and cops and roads even if I don't use them -- in fact, most people who pay for these things do not directly utilize the services or products they pay for directly! -- which isn't free market even if it isn't socialist

Mal_Fet posted...

my point is you're being generous to donald jr and not to colbert, though neither is presenting socialism correctly

you keep talking about Capital, but if anything it talks about the wealth redistribution that goes upwards more than it talks about the sort of wealth redistribution you're talking about. the goal of it isn't to take the products of capitalism, it's to take the means of production from capitalists which is a more sophisticated argument (sort of like how your argument that taxes don't always go to people who don't use the services they pay for is more sophisticated than taking candy from a person to give to another)

I personally think neither person is being instructive or helpful

Since not all taxation is analogous to socialism then Trump Jr.s tweet is not analogous to taxation. That was brought up and that's why I pointed it out.

You aren't denied usage of public services even if you may never use them. This is fundamentally different from wealth redistribution in that your money goes to things you are able to use as opposed to never seeing your money again because it has been redistributed in the name of "equality".

Don Jr. made a simple point in 140 characters. Colbert did a four-minute monologue in which he completely misses the point of the tweet, and also demonstrates that he doesn't know what socialism is. My analysis of each is as expansive as the statements themselves. Is that not fair?
