So, as a freshman, I have to take an English composition class. Some of you may remember me making a topic about how boring one of the assignments was and also how long it was (which is an awful combo that makes me not want to do the assignment, but I got it done eventually and got a 100 on it so whatever).

Basically, all of the English assignments for my class are due on Tuesday, and it's been three weeks in a row now that I've put off starting my papers or rhetorical analysis worksheets until the weekend is over. On Mondays, my schedule is pretty full until late afternoon, and even then I have a night class so I end up not being entirely free until 9 PM or so.

I essentially do this to myself, but fuck if I care to actually do my English assignments on the weekends. I use those days to wind down and do things that keep me connected to my hobbies and shit I actually like doing, like playing guitar and writing songs. I'm okay with a couple nights of lost sleep if it means I get to keep up with my music (and occasionally with my games too, I'm about 120 hours into Persona 5 and I've still got a decent bit to go so sometimes I play that on weekends just so I know I'm not gonna be stuck on it forever).

Tonight, I have taken an hour or two here and there to sleep when I get tired, just so I'm actually conscious while writing this paper (it's a five-page essay where I have to map out three different positions on nuclear weapons), but for the most part I've been awake all night. I've got a test for Astronomy in less than three hours, the English paper is due in about 4 hours, and I still need to do a quick review for that Astronomy test lol. Thankfully I'm almost done with the damn English paper so I can get that out of the way and then study and hope everything goes well from there

I am gonna sleep like a damn log when I get home this evening.

Got that essay done, it's uploaded and I feel good about it. I'm actually really not even that tired right now, but I know it'll hit me later.

Now to study for Astronomy for a little less than an hour! Wish me luck on the test guys

Good luck on your test! Hopefully you stay in that "not tired" phase until it's over

good luck.

yeah, in my experience you're not that tired if you pulled an all nighter before a test because of adrenaline/nerves. then you take the test and then you sleep for 20 hours.

Never found it efficient to pull an all nighter. Just sleep and wake up real early the next morning and half-ass it really fast.

For example, your 5 page essay which could be reasonably shat out in an hour, takes 6~ hours overnight due to all the distractions and delirium of staying awake. Same with a review for a test, which will take probably an hour or more while sleep deprived to retain half of what you could do with 15 minutes post-sleep. The net result is you still get done at the last minute, but you've had 6 hours of sleep instead of waste.

I was forced into exactly one all-nighter in college. Happened during my very last week of classes too - had to do my senior thesis.

I think all-nighters are too common. Most people are so inefficient when they're running on fumes at 4am.

In my undergrad as an English major I wrote approximately 25 papers, not including those on exams, and I can say with certainty that 100% of them involved me not starting until nearly midnight the night before they were due. I only actually had to stay up the entire night for 4-5 of them though. It's not fun but the feeling when you finish is amazing.

I can't motivate myself to work unless I absolutely need to be doing it.

I only pulled one all-nighter in college (and only kinda; I ended up sleeping from like 8-1 or something) to do my last lab report for my upper div physics lab.

I honestly don't do this for any of my other courses lol

If I have shit to do for Astronomy, I'll do it over the weekend. If I have to take an online test for Government, then no problem. It's just the first-year English class. I know how to write just fine and I've scored high As on literally every assignment so far, so I can do it no problem. It's just hard to will myself to do something I don't care to do at all

Don't take weekends off, take tuesdays/thursdays. Should be pretty easy to set up in 2nd year when you get more control over your classes.

physically & mentally it's horrible, but i did enjoy the sense of completion at like 7AM, as well as seeing everyone else starting their day while mine hadn't ended
