I don't want the bottom of the bottom I just want some place clean, high quality, with a price that reflects the high quality food.

Obviously. McDonalds has items for $1. Fancy restaurants can get over $100 a plate. Yes there is a middle ground man. You really need someone to tell you this?

Uh, yeah. There's a lot of crap like Olive Garden, Chili's, Applebee's, TGI Fridays, ect. Then you can take a slight step up and go to something like Texas Roadhouse or Fuddruckers.

Shit like Applebees and Olive Garden I guess, but you could consider Denny's as a middle point, too. Look for something local. Prices tend to reflect the quality better and the food will beat any chain in the same price-range.

Most Italian restaurants [besides Olive Garden] are de facto mid-tier because of the cost of quality ingredients. My area has a lot of them and I'm in the south.

The vast majority of sit-down restaurants where you order from an actual waiter are mid-tier anyway. And there's fast casual - which is sit-down food that's slightly better than regular fast food.

Is there really no one here with like... local, non-chain restaurants in their area?

Like, there's hundreds where I live. I eat at casual, affordable restaurants all the time, and they're not shit like Olive Garden either.

Well according to some people on this board, chains need to be in every town across the country to be a true chain, and they've never heard of Maggiano's. So yeah

Well price isn't always indicative of quality once you abandon chain restaurants where the quality is pretty consistent. Outside chains you can over pay for standard food fare or find a place that's hell of good quality at a bargain. Take it from a guy who has a friend obsessed with proving to me the smaller the hole-in-wall restaurant it is the better.

He hasn't yet.

some places are billing themselves as "fast casual dining" these days, but tbh they are basically just fast food

They're fast food without the ultra corporate "squeeze out every inch of cheap efficiency" ideology, basically. They serve real food that's affordable instead of junk food for bottom dollar. If you want to eat a decent lunch and have time for more than just the restaurant equivalent of a vending machine, you go to fast casual.

Well we go during our lunch hour at work mostly. So bars and pubs aren't usually the likely place to go.

Also he knows I go to bars and pubs to drink not eat.

If people want to pay $10 for a burger that's just as good elsewhere for $5-6 I don't blame them for making profit from saps. When it comes to food a lot of Americans are delusional.

Bars and pubs are for drinking primarily and eating secondary. Not saying I haven't ever had good food at a bar the few times I do it. But it's never been omg food. Going to a restaurant is where one goes to eat. Going to bar to eat is like going to a dance club for a quiet corner to drink alone.

Not even close. Going anywhere else for the same food you can get at a bar is paying more for worse food. At least around here your just as likely to meet up with friends at one to eat as you are to drink.

Basic fare food is served at bars with the bet that you'll be intoxicated and shovel anything in your mouth to get carbs, calories and protein to counter the alcohol's effects. Again I'm not saying none aren't good since you choose to edit that part of my previous comment out. But bars are for drinking primarily. Eating is just a byproduct of drunkenness.

I've been to two TRs. One in Oklahoma City and one in Omaha, NE. Both had peanut shells everywhere on the floor and people would just eat peanuts and add to the floor piles. Is it like that everywhere? I was totally cool with it but my wife was mortified and just broke her peanuts onto a plate until I said she was embarrassing me and dumped her plate on the floor.
