Just passed Metro Kingdom and it has been delightful so far. I could live without the motion controls but fortunately they're not too obtrusive.

Almost perfect. Swimming control needs to be better and the Metro area is a little meh compared to the others.

But still, damn its good.

The whole motion control thing is a pretty glaring flaw, so it's certainly not perfect in that regard. While there are some nice tracks, the soundtrack as a whole is pretty underwhelming and has absolutely nothing on the Galaxy OSTs, so it's far from perfect in that regard.

Not that I'm not having a blast with Odyssey myself, but right now I'm thinking 8.5 or 9.

i like how a and b does the same thing and x and y does the same thing. Why not map those to do different things like the jump slide to the hat. instead of holding L then hit y.

no such things as perfect. i'm sure its an amazing game, but people having differing tastes, and thus it won't be perfect to everyone. though with breath of the wild and this game getting the praise its getting, I am considering maybe delving back into nintendo consoles. I got a 2DS late last year and it was the first nintendo product I had bought since the gamecube. (and i'm actually playing it more than my ps4)

Yeah this is what puts me off Nintendo consoles. Forced motion control sucks and Nintendo love that shit. Still between Mario, Zelda and a few others games I'd like the Switch is building up a nice collection. Perhaps when it sees a price cut I'll get one.

Edit:

I don't think the motion controls is that bad. It's kinda like the shake smash mechanic in Galaxy except it's expanded upon.

What does that do for the shake-only actions (cap spin, vertical cap throws, any of the "shake joycon to ____ faster" capture actions, etc.)?

I haven't really found a need for the cap spin or the vertical cap throws.

There are quite a few spots where there's a stack of coins running vertically down from a cliff edge, and I'm not really sure how one would do the "hit a bunch of flowers with your cap in quick succession" moons without the spin.

I hate that they did this.
The swimming in this game is disappointing when you compare it to other 3D Mario games.
Although I'm pretty sure they made it that way just to force the player to possess a cheep cheep...

You can hit ZL to drop down further. Not as smooth as using a cheep cheep, but better than just waiting.

It seems to be doing an even better job than BotW did for rewarding aimless exploration, which is saying something. "I wonder what's over here" is pretty rarely a waste of time, and that's just plain fun.

Even beyond that sort of thing, there are moons hidden in so many places that you're likely to find real rewards for wandering about. Sticking coins in to acknowledge that somebody's going to find those obscure nooks and crannies is even better.

I just checked and apparently turning off motion controls just disables the motion aiming.

I also discovered today that you can do the cap spin by hitting the cap button after putting Mario into a spin (twirl the stick a couple times, which also lets you do a spinning jump a la the flowers). Dunno about the vertical throws.

Honestly, it felt easier, since the jumps are consistent, rather than mario's varying jump speed and height.
