About Manafort's undeclared foreign money...

http://www.businessinsider.com/paul-manafort-daughter-text-messages-ukraine-2017-3

In a series of texts reviewed by Business Insider that appear to have been sent by Andrea to her sister, Jessica, in March 2015, Andrea said their father had "no moral or legal compass."

"Don't fool yourself," Andrea wrote to her sister, according to the texts. "That money we have is blood money."

"You know he has killed people in Ukraine? Knowingly," she continued, according to the reviewed texts. "As a tactic to outrage the world and get focus on Ukraine. Remember when there were all those deaths taking place. A while back. About a year ago. Revolts and what not. Do you know whose strategy that was to cause that, to send those people out and get them slaughtered."

I'm sorry, they broke the news much later than other networks. The article there is a few hours old. With everyone and their mother knowing that charges were to be filed today and other information was set to release, why was that a news channel's priority? The Indictment news broke before those segments and they said nothing. Ridic.

I don't have a television and don't watch network news unless I'm sitting waiting for a doctor. Often websites have more news information--think of the Fox News channel demographic. The people watching it on their televisions are not the same people reading news articles online.

That's a good way to be.

I personally had way too much coffee today and the news is still interesting. It's hard to say how far everything will go--but it is clear now things are going, and people will be charged.

We'd only heard about the charges being filed today. Manafort and Gates will be seen in front of a judge in 10 minutes. Everything with George Papadopoulos (having confessed and cooperating with the FBI) is pretty new and surprising.

I was expecting more nothing in my burger today

It's barely even an observation.

My point is that you didn't even bother to go to Fox to see if it was true or not. You instead chose to filter through an obviously biased 'news' entity and immediately thought "Well look at Fox being shitty".

My first thought on the other hand was, "Huh, I wonder if that's true." Sure enough, Vox was being duplicitous.

Every news organization is going to continue being shitty when the average person doesn't even put in the barest amount of effort to verify the claim. Which, to be fair, the shitty news organization is supposed to be doing themselves. But that's the world we live in.

At the time the article was written it was accurate (see the screenshot of the two networks). it wasn't until the Fox & Friends segment ended that any network coverage began. Then the coverage was primarily based on "illegal leaks" of the indictment information, not on the actual indictments.

By the time you checked to verify (the website, not the news network) it was hours later and yes at that point the coverage changed. Screenshots (with timestamps) abound observing the earlier lack of coverage on the network. Since neither of us can time travel and probably don;t have fox news on DVR that's the best we're going to do.

Thankfully Fox news has since started reporting on this issue on their network. They were undeniably slow to start on it.

Yes, but you and Vox are attributing malice to something that can be explained in a hundred different ways. Maybe they wanted to save the report for their whatever, 'hot' hour. Maybe they wanted to take more time to dissect the information instead of shooting from the hip. Maybe their network producer is sick.

Clearly they weren't just pretending it didn't exist.

Also, while Vox may have been telling the truth at the time of their article, you evidently did not read it until it was not true. So instead of going to Fox' website, you again assumed it to be the truth.

oh, no. Malice? Not purely. I think there's ample stubbornness incompetence through and through. And intentionally downplaying some things.

Rupert Murdoch (someone with a close relationship to the POTUS) really doesn't deserve or need people freely playing devil's advocate for his media mouthpieces, he pays enough people for that.

Anyway on to the actual news with more articles:

I am wondering when Carter Page is going to come up. This summer Page and George Papadopoulos were talked about in many of the same articles. Page seems to have less involvement, but we won't know for a while.

Regardless as to what comes with the Russian connections, it's becoming more clear that Russia did indeed work to sow distrust in the U.S. political system, and was very effective with those efforts. Look at this shitshow.

Conspiracy Against The US

Another term for this is "treason," for those keeping score at home

No, it isn't.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-41807131
https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/2381

"Treason" is an actual crime with it's own define and, believe it or not, it is actually possible to legally be charged with treason. If you are not being charged with treason, you are not being charged with treason. I figured this would be tautological enough to be obvious.

While you could make an argument that the Conspiracy Against The US charge could constitute treasonous affairs, in this case it seems to be directly related to the other charges and wouldn't meet the minimum requirements for treason.

That said, I'm glad to see almost everyone else in this topic is more level-headed and, at the very least, isn't posting blatant lies. Let the investigation work, it can take time (as in years). This news is interesting, but doesn't really prove much beyond what's explicitly stated. We do not know what is unstated, what is still under review, etc. Trying to extrapolate beyond this news is going to cause one to bring in what they want, hope, or believe to be true.

https://www.politico.com/story/2017/10/30/murdoch-fox-mueller-trump-244333

The Wall Street Journal editorial page has in the past been a stern critic of Donald Trump, but in recent days has come under fire for pieces that critics say shift attention away from the president with many people, including former staffers, left to wonder why.

After having generally avoided Trumps efforts to de-legitimize democratic institutions, the Journal last week wrote an editorial calling for special counsel Robert Mueller to resign and featured a contributor op-ed Sunday afternoon that said Trump should issue a blanket pardon in the Russian scandal, including of himself.

The Journal has also called for an investigation into Democratic Party collusion with Russia, a conservative talking point in the wake of a Washington Post report that Hillary Clintons campaign paid for some of the opposition research that led to the infamous dossier of anti-Trump information but which made no suggestion of any collusion with Russia.

The points made in the pieces in the Journal, owned by Rupert Murdoch, not only tracked with White House talking points but were similar to those being hawked on other Murdoch properties, including the New York Post and Fox News. On October 28, the Post also ran an op-ed calling for Muellers resignation, while Fox News personalities have beat a steady drum calling for attention to shift away from any investigation of Trump and toward Hillary Clinton and the Democrats.

Reaction to the Journal pieces on Twitter was mostly unkind:

WSJ edit page has gone full bats--t, now hosting an op-ed suggesting Trump pardon everyone, including himself, tweeted Columbia Journalism School professor and former high-ranking Wall Street Journal editor Bill Grueskin.

This is embarrassing for every good reporter at that paper, New York Times reporter Nikole Hannah-Jones tweeted of the Journal editorial boards call for Mueller to resign and Democrats to be investigated.

Paul Gigot, the editorial page editor and vice president of The Wall Street Journal, declined to comment. Mark Cunningham, the New York Posts Executive Editorial Page Editor, also declined comment. Both did not answer questions regarding whether Murdoch had any input in editorial direction.

There is a general flabbergastedness about the drift of the edit page, said one former senior Wall Street Journal editor. What is fascinating to a lot of people is, why are they now coming around to being sycophants to Trump, aping some of these things that are part of the Republican echo chamber?

He said its difficult to tell exactly how Murdoch exerts his influence over the Journal.

Its like mumbled phone conversations with [editor in chief] Gerry Baker or other conversations that you wouldnt really know about, he said. I think he puts his thumb on a lot of things or makes it known that he didnt like certain stories or that kind of thing. But it was never like, oh this happened because Rupert Murdoch wanted it to or didnt happen because Rupert Murdoch didnt want it to.

(continuation)

Another former Journal staffer said that Murdochs influence is often felt in subtle ways. The thing about Murdoch is that its never a situation where Rupert Murdoch comes into the 10 oclock news meeting and says I want this on the front page. He has his proxies who intuitively understand what he wants, he said.

The Journal editorial page has long been known as a bulwark of conservative thought. It has often been tough on Trump, including in March, when it scorched him in an editorial titled, A Presidents Credibility. The editorial called Trump his own worst political enemy, and said, Two months into his Presidency, Gallup has Mr. Trumps approval rating at 39%. No doubt Mr. Trump considers that fake news, but if he doesnt show more respect for the truth most Americans may conclude hes a fake President.

But the recent shift has raised flags, for some. The pardon op-ed was written by David Rivkin, Jr. and Lee Casey, lawyers who served in the White House and Justice Department under Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. But the editorial calling for Mueller to resign and for Democrats to be investigated was written by the papers editorial board, its institutional voice.

I dont know a single WSJ alum whos not agog at where that edit page is heading, former Journal editor Neil King posted on Twitter.

Adding on to the why Fox News is especially awful and seems like an alternate reality unwilling to criticize the current white house

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/donald-trump-rupert-murdoch-phone-to-discuss-strategy-a7699601.html

Donald Trump and long-time friend media mogul Rupert Murdoch have weekly chats about strategy according to sources close to both of them.

Mr Murdoch chairs NewsCorp, the parent company of the tabloid New York Post and conservative news outlets Fox News and Heat Street, and is said to be close to Mr Trump.

Decades earlier the New York Post made Mr Trump. He went from a local real estate developer to a multi-millionaire gossip column staple in the 1980s largely due to the paper.

As for television, the Fox News Channel was loyal to Mr Trumps candidacy throughout the 2016 campaign, as well as hosting pundits who called other news coverage of the bombastic candidate as fake news.

More on Manafort and Trump being tight. read the article for the texts because damn

http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/entry/paul-manafort-daughter-trump-texts_us_59f748b6e4b03cd20b832fe0

Paul Manafort was brought in to lead the delegate process, which he did, and was dismissed not too long after that, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday. Paul was brought on sometime in June, and by the middle of August he was no longer with the campaign, then-press secretary Sean Spicer said in March.

Spicers statement was untrue, and Sanders claim was misleading.

The public record shows that Manafort, who had known Trump for decades, joined his campaign toward the end of March 2016. And Manaforts eventual resignation didnt necessarily indicate he was leaving Trumps orbit, according to his daughters texts. Manafort Shand may have wanted to inflate her fathers role to impress her friends. But even after her father stepped down from the campaign last August, Manafort Shand was under the impression that he had continuing influence within the Trump campaign and beyond.

The following texts, sent by Manafort Shand to her sister, Jessica Manafort, and to friends and discovered by the website Krypt3ia earlier this year, offer a markedly different understanding of the Trump/Manafort relationship than the president and his allies are attempting to sell. (Manafort previously confirmed the authenticity of several of the texts to Politico.)

AMS: Yup. Thats a match made in heaven. Egomaniacs galore.

AMS: But yea [my dad is] super tight with the Trumps. All the kids call him all the time. And him and Trump both live in Trump Tower in NYC. So its like a sitcom. Although top top secret. Cant repeat, promise? My dad isnt getting paid for trump.

Friend: WHAT, really?

AMS: He refused payment. Trump is only covering expenses.

Friend: Political favors later?

AMS: Eh maybe but the truth of it is, I think there are rules for how much you can pay campaign personnel, so it isnt much to start with not to my dad anyway. And my dad wants Trump to listen to him and respect him. View him as an equal, not as staff. So refusing payment makes it so. And makes it clear to Trump why my dad is doing it because he wants to.

AMS: And my dad wont take an appointment either. Trump knows that, too. So this isnt for personal gain for my dad, and thats true not a game. So why is my dad doing it? Sport.

AMS: This is his wheelhouse. And he gets off on power too. My dad loves challenges and this is like a chess game. He got a mistress because he was bored. Trump is his new mistress.

https://amp.businessinsider.com/prosecutors-say-manafort-and-gates-received-millions-from-russian-oligarchs-2017-10

A newly unsealed docket in the criminal case against Paul Manafort and his longtime business associate Rick Gates says both men had received "millions of dollars" from Ukrainian and Russian oligarchs that would allow them "to live comfortably abroad" and therefore make them a flight risk.

The documents, unsealed on Tuesday, include arrest warrants and the terms of Manafort's and Gates' release. They say both men "have connections to Ukrainian and Russian oligarchs, who have provided millions of dollars" to them.

"Foreign connections of this kind indicate that the defendants would have access to funds and an ability 'to live comfortably' abroad ... a consideration that strongly suggests risk of flight," the filings said.

A grand jury indicted Manafort and Gates on 12 counts on Monday as part of the special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 US election and whether Donald Trump's presidential campaign team colluded with Moscow to influence the outcome.

Gates and Manafort, who was Trump's campaign chairman, pleaded not guilty on Monday and were placed on house arrest, though Manafort faces "high-intensity supervision."

In the filing, the government argued that they "pose a risk of flight based on the serious nature of the charges, their history of deceptive and misleading conduct, the potentially significant sentences the defendants face, the strong evidence of guilt, their significant financial resources, and their foreign connections."

Manafort and Gates were required to turn over their passports to the FBI and notify the bureau of their movements. A footnote in the filing says Manafort has three passports with different numbers and has "submitted ten United States Passport applications on ten different occasions" over the past decade.

"Manafort and Gates are frequent international travelers, consistent with the nature of their work for foreign entities," the filing said. "Within the last year, Manafort has traveled to Dubai, Cancun, Panama City, Havana, Shanghai, Madrid, Tokyo, and Grand Cayman Island ... The investigation has also revealed that Gates and Manafort traveled to Cyprus, the place where many of their foreign accounts are based."

Another footnote in the filing says Manafort registered a phone number and email address using an alias and that he traveled with that phone to "Mexico on June 2017; to China on May 23, 2017; and to Ecuador on May 9, 2017."

Citing financial documents filed in Cyprus, The New York Times reported in July that Manafort was in debt to pro-Russian interests by as much as $17 million by the time he joined Trump's campaign team in March 2016.

Manafort also has significant business ties to the Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska, who signed a $10 million annual contract with Manafort in 2006 for a lobbying project in the US that Manafort said would "greatly benefit the Putin Government," The Associated Press reported in March.

That relationship turned sour in 2014, though, when Deripaska's representatives filed legal complaints in the Cayman Islands alleging that Manafort all but disappeared with $19 million Deripaska had given him to invest in a Ukrainian TV company called Black Sea Cable.

"Early in the 2016 presidential campaign, Deripaska's representatives openly accused Manafort of fraud and pledged to recover the money from him," the AP reported. "After Trump earned the nomination, Deripaska's representatives said they would no longer discuss the case."

In a July 2016 email, Manafort asked his longtime employee Konstantin Kilimnik, a Russian-Ukrainian dual citizen, to offer Deripaska "private briefings" about the campaign.

Though the filing doesn't name Kilimnik, it says that "Manafort, Gates, and a Russian national - who is a longstanding employee of Davis Manafort Partners, Inc. and DMP International LLC (collectively DMI) - served as the beneficial owners and signatories" on the many offshore accounts they had opened.

"More than $75 million flowed through these overseas accounts," the filing said, "and the government has substantial documentary evidence to support that allegation."

Manafort also "represented the value of his assets on loan applications and other financial documents in divergent amounts, " the court filing says. The values varied wildly in 2016 - $48 million in February, to $136 million in May, to $25 million in November - suggesting "considerable resources, the full extent of which is unclear," the filing says.

Prosecutors say that Gates, meanwhile, "frequently changed banks and opened and closed bank accounts" and that from late 2004 to early 2017 he opened 55 accounts with 13 different banks, some of which were based in England and Cyprus.

Sam Clovis, a former Trump campaign official who has become entangled in special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation, has withdrawn his nomination for a top post in the Agriculture Department.

We respect Mr. Cloviss decision to withdraw his nomination," White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement.

This is also after he admitted that he has literally no education or training in the sciences.

Clovis was picked by Trump to be Agriculture undersecretary for research, education and economics and his nomination was already in trouble in the Senate because of some of his past writings and statements and questions about whether he was qualified for a job meant to be filled by a scientist.

He drew further scrutiny after the release of court documents related to Papadopouloss guilty plea. His lawyer confirmed that Clovis was the unnamed campaign supervisor cited in the documents who received emails from Papadopoulos about attempts to arrange meetings between the campaign and Russian representatives.

Clovis, in a statement released earlier this week, said Papadopoulos was acting on his own and that the campaign had a strict rule against traveling abroad and claiming to speak on behalf of the campaign.

The political climate inside Washington has made it impossible for me to receive balanced and fair consideration for this position, Clovis said in a letter to Trump that was released by the White House. The relentless assaults on you and your team seem to be a blood sport that only increases in intensity each day.

Papadopoulos was one of five volunteer advisers on foreign policy identified by Trump in a March 2016 interview. Over the next several months, according to court documents, he cultivated at least three contacts who promised dirt on Clinton, Trumps election rival, and introductions to top-level Russians. He kept some people in the campaign, including Clovis, apprised of his efforts by email.

everyone is so dirty in this

from what I have been reading, in Greek media they are talking about this situation very differently. Especially about how Papadopoulos was not some low ranking nobody.

WASHINGTON A group of conservative Republican lawmakers introduced a resolution on Friday calling for Robert Mueller to recuse himself as the special counsel investigating Russia's interference in the 2016 US election and whether President Donald Trump's campaign team colluded with Moscow.

Reps. Matt Gaetz of Florida, Andy Biggs of Arizona, and Louie Gohmert of Texas say Mueller should step down because he was the FBI director in 2010 when US government agencies approved the sale of Uranium One, a Canadian energy company, to a Russian nuclear-energy firm. The deal required approval because Uranium One had mining operations in the US.

Gaetz says the issue is that Mueller's FBI had found evidence of criminal activity that may have been relevant to the deal but did not bring any charges, and that Mueller therefore should recuse himself from the current investigation.

"These deeply troubling events took place when Mr. Mueller was the Director of the FBI. As such, his impartiality is hopelessly compromised," Gaetz said in a statement. "He must step down immediately."

Many of Gaetz's Republican colleagues, however, have previously expressed support for Mueller and his investigation. Senate Republicans have even introduced bills to create a barrier between Trump and Mueller in the event the president attempts to fire him.

Some conservatives have latched on to the Uranium One deal recently, pointing to a report tangentially tying the deal to the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, Hillary Clinton, who was the secretary of state at the time, and her husband, former President Bill Clinton.

Didn't they also say it wasn't up to Comey to decide if Clinton should be indicted because the FBI is not there to bring on charges?

lol well that don't take long anyway

Not sure why what two congressmen -- out of a total of 435 -- are doing is remotely newsworthy when nobody else is on board. If you're going to pick two Republicans and yell CONSPIRACY or some other nonsense, you might want to pick people further up the food chain.
