Saya no Uta is typically first one I look towards in regards to horror. Just note it's Lovecraftian. Horror like DDLC is more like Higurashi as people have recc'd or in an anime case you technically have Future Diary.

You absolutely serve alcohol to dogs in that game.

If you do play it, you should start with the two Prologue chapters, which I think can be accessed from the title screen. They were originally demos from before full release, and the story actually references them even though they weren't playable in the full game originally.

I was going to say something about finishing underwater ray romano recently. well both halves of the second game anyway.

though it's not a pure vn on average there's like one or two fairly easy srpg battles for every hour of reading.

I'd say you don't really need to be familiar with the first game to understand the plot of the second, but you'd probably get more out of the ending if you did and there are a few other callbacks to it in the final arc. before that it's mostly just character cameos that are kind of obvious that they're from the first game.

though a pretty significant portion of mask of deception is sol since it's mostly setup and character introductions. in particular there's like three hours of sol before stage 8, it didn't bother me but I see how it could bother others.

I also started tears to tiara 2 recently, but it seems to take the srpg portions more seriously with equipment and ranking and the like.

I liked Saya no Uta, but I've also gotten yelled at for liking it. mixed reception all around. it's short, though.

premise: after an accident, the main character starts seeing everyone as hideous lovecraftian abominations and is going crazy from it. then he meets Saya, whom he perceives as a totally normal girl.

naturally, they become best friends and go on many happy adventures together

Yeah this one's really fun. One of my top 3 games of last year. Great script, fun characters, lovely OST, and it's easy enough to get into.

There are some great VNs out there like the Muv-Luv games where you really gotta prepare for the long haul.

sexual content isn't like a deal breaker or seller anyway

I guess I just hit three that all hit on it in some way. DDLC was the mildest, but even that had the one girl creepily jilling it with a pen she stole from you so I assumed it was like expected in some way.

G-Senjou is reasonably fast-paced if you ignore the side routes (which I recommend doing). Like a lot of VNs, the intro is "high schoolers hanging out and doing high school things" but Gsen actually has enough intrigue that it's not dull like they frequently are.

I think I played it right after Sharin or pretty close to it. Sharin no Kuni just has a far better everything aside from maybe music and since they're by the same studio and stuff I couldn't help making comparisons. Maou's the only decent major story character in G-Sen and I just didn't really like how the main plot story developed.

How I played it was

First 4(?) chapters
Side routes as an intermission (probably a good idea to skip these till this point or after getting through the entire main plot regardless even if you like the characters)
Last chapter

Tsubaki route was probably the only one I regretted playing. I mean I didn't like Kanon much either but her route wasn't terrible.

Like if I were to recommend a VN to any random person who isn't a VN nut it'd probably be that one. Then if they liked it might recommend some others.

now since it's on VNDB it counts. @Lopen would agree with this, but as horrible as Fate/Extra's gameplay is, the storyline is actually pretty solid.

Quick look on VNDB spits this out for most popular:

Fate/Stay Night
G-senjou no Maou
Saya no Uta
Grisaia no Kajitsu
Katawa Shoujo
Steins;Gate
Clannad
Muv-Luv Alternative
Ever17 -The Out of Infinity-
Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo

So basically, this topic has covered all of the most talked about VNs out there.

I'm a little confused when people mention gameplay. Are there ones where it's more than decision trees?

I guess PW/999 have some sort of exploratory/presentation parts, but I assumed most were like the ones I played already.

Also also, a short tagline description for things being recc'd is A++ so I don't have to google myself into spoilers, while still giving me an idea. There were a few done like that already, and unsurprisingly those are the ones I seem to be leaning toward most right now.
