Every other game with minor cosmetic dlc gets hammered for microtransactions but Nintendo didn't when they released mii costumes for Smash.

DLC - even miserly DLC like the one you referenced - is not the same thing as microtransactions.

Huh? Cosmetic DLC is something I consistently see regarded as an acceptable use of DLC. People just hate pay2win or locked on-disc content

then why is it considered microtransactions when anyone else does it?

Because nobody gave a fuck about the Mii costumes. They were by far the least popular characters in the game. Nintendo probably lost the $5 it cost them to program them in the first place and that's punishment enough.

Cosmetic DLC sucks because it takes virtually nothing for them to add to the game yet it is charged for and all it does is put borders between the players based on ability or willingness to pay.

cosmetic dlc is also never considered a must have by most anyone. it does nothing to enhance, the gameplay or story of the game. just a visual change. yeah i'd rather not have to pay for them. but I hate having to buy new characters in a game far more.

as for smash though none of the new characters felt like must haves. I bought most all of them, but I had money to blow at the time. never got corrin though and likely never will.

There's actual effort put into making new characters, unless it is clear they were already made on release and then held from the final disc. That's worth something. I don't like when it is not gated (like when those with the characters are allowed to play those that don't have them) but otherwise it's not bad to ask gamers for money for post development that took manhours and labor.

When you talk about certain cosmetic stuff though... it's like, yeah I'm sure time went into it, but you're just being so petty for charging for it and you're creating divisions with the people buying your games. Suddenly a game that is egalitarian has those with rags and those with finery. And all because they want to make like a 95% profit and they know they can play off of this outside "keeping up with the Jones" human nature. It's just annoying to me.

I understand work goes into things. doesn't change the fact it bugs me. at least in fighting games, I hate not having all the characters in a fighting game. only way I make myself feel better about it is remind myself that back in the day streetfighter would add new characters by just re releasing the same game with some minor tweaks and a few new characters and charging full price.

Yeah there's no real way to completely gate it. I mean, online yeah. But fighting games are not very good online and are played in person.

I actually like the new trend of just charging a lot more for any future expansions upfront. I mean, it sucks paying that $80-100 right away for content you don't have but I think it makes more sense for the business and the consumer.

ehh its a nice option, but lets just keep it a option. take injustice for example. if it wasn't for the black lightning skin I probably wouldn't be interested in getting raiden at all. it would bug me not having all fighters. but I felt the game went overboard on guest characters particularly MK related, and I think I would have decided to vote with my wallet about that.

The cosmetic DLC was only for the most useless character in the game. Miis were only allowed for local multiplayer.

People did have issues with that, at least from what I remember. It's also not considered a microtransaction. That is technically DLC.

Microtransaction is GTAV's shark cards, Overwatch lootboxes, pretty much any lootbox system actually. In the case of even Nintendo, on their mobile games (Like FEHeroes & Animal Crossing), you can use real money to either get more heroes or speed up crafting.

Mostly because nobody cared about Mii costumes. The consensus was generally that spending a dollar on them was dumb, whether they're technically microtransactions or just cheap DLC, and nobody really suffered for not having them.
