I used to travel all over the US making $14 an hour with overtime. But I've decided to give up my insurance and 401k a career in this field to become a waiter.

I put my two weeks in on tuesday and I have an interview at olive garden.

ask me anything.

Well 14 an hour isn't that great so I'd assume you probably make more as a server at a restaurant like that

Yeah, I will make WAY less money, especially if I went through with my soul sucking promotion ;p

Yeah it is good money, and I like going above and beyond and have great memory and attention to detail. It will be easy for me and I'll be good at it.

No way this is true. I know lots of folks who work in the restaurant/bar industry. They do better than 14 an hour... at least if they work at a place like that where folks' tabs are generally well over 50 bucks

Not just right now. And if I'm ever in dire straights I can just go back to LVC work. It's always gonna be there for me. I have a consider amount in savings right now and I don't plan to spend any of it as longs as I don't go any length of time not working.

Makes sense. Even if an online course was entirely on the level, it doesn't have the same experience.

To be fair, while the job was more respectable, it was hardly much of a career. Plus having a college degree -- assuming he picks a good field, etc, -- is much better for career progression.

Well, as soon as he disclosed how much he was making and mentioned that he's also going to college, it seemed like the much better choice. Not that I'm the biggest advocate for colleges, since I feel that most degrees are a ripoff and companies have passed the burden of training people themselves onto the would-be employees.

Wait, so you're losing your 401k and insurance benefits?

This sounds like a terrible decision. Figure your new paycheck if you put the same amount that was being added before (including employer contributions) into a Roth IRA, minus a private healthcare plan with similar benefits, and see if you can even afford college at this point.

You are at a point in your career you need to be making lateral moves instead of starting back at square one. Get with a different construction crew and put your work history to use.

Hey, he just said it was a job in construction. He may have literally scraped barrels where he was. And he would certainly not keep his position at Olive Garden if he grunted.

Frankly I think you're rather foolish in that decision since being a waiter will not have as good of benefits or pay as your construction job. Not to mention it'll be a long time before you even get even close to fulltime hours.

I can respect following your dreams to do what you love. Besides, 23 is still young, especially if you don't have a wife and kids to worry about. Plenty of time to try out some things and find what you really want to do.

Plus I could see making more money being a waiter at a restaurant like Olive Garden then $14 an hour. Being a waiter at a diner probably makes you very little, but those higher end chain restaurants mean you are pretty much always busy and always getting 20% - 25% tips on those $50+ checks.

Working part-time and going to college? >_> I was working 30-40 hours a week while I was in college and I still maintained a 3.9+ GPA. Of course, I wasn't going out drinking every night of week -- partly because I don't drink -- but I still had free time.

I know about getting an ira, i've been looking into this for a while. I think im going to let my 401k stay in limbo for about 6 months, let it mature and use that extra money to fix my car and what not.

Insurance is a bummer tho RIP my teeth lol.

I hope you guys follow your silly dreams and drag no one down. My new major (in life) is going to be game design xD. im quitting my job to follow my dreams and exercise my creativity

To each their own. I have zero interest in going to college. Too expensive, time consuming, and doesn't guarantee a job.

Going for fucking weird trolling? Overlooking that making meals and doing laundry is actually pretty fast -- which you'd know if you ever did it for yourself -- I started doing my own laundry when I was 11 or 12 and very rarely dinner with the folks while in college mostly because I was either at school or working.
