I have a first gen paperwhite that's still working as well as it did the day it arrived. If you like reading, I'd say it's definitely worth it. Being able to read with as much eye strain as you'd get from a normal book (even in the dark) is amazing.

Reading on a phone or tablet puts more strain on your eyes. It is much more comfortable for me to read on my kindle. If you like to read, it is absolutely worth it. I read more regularly on it than physical books now.

Oh, and the battery lasts much longer than it would on a tablet. You can regularly read for a couple weeks without recharging.
