Ginyu's swap isn't even as ridiculous as 16's instakill. Not to mention the X-factor which everyone has access to is still the largest equalizer since it's so powerful. Tien has that 80% damage move also.

This game is about the absurdly powerful nonsense that defines DBZ. It's definitely going to be embraced as part of the game, and we probably haven't seen anything close to the craziest stuff yet.

You know all those ridiculous posts about DBZ fans not getting fighting games? Yeah, that's gonna cut both ways.

Not sure Im understanding you right, but if what youre saying is that fighting game fans will miss the point of a DBZ fighting game and try to get stuff banned, youre definitely wrong. Because A) like 90% of FGC loves DBZ already, and B) except for the Smash games which largely dont have overlap with the rest of the crowd, most games scenes are pretty reticent to ban anything.

Plenty of games still get banned characters in tournaments. The difference now is that games get patched whereas Brawl didn't so when they banned Meta Knight he wasn't coming back. SSB4 doesn't even have any banned characters currently (except Miis sometimes if I understand correctly).

I'll be shocked if it literally goes forever without banning a character in a major tournament at some point.

(Also I wouldn't actually judge them on the same level as "it's not a fireball it's a ki blast" or anything.)

Miis aren't banned, it's just no one plays them because tournament rulesets enforce the default moveset of every character, and the default Mii movesets are all garbage.

Super Turbo Akuma, Orochi Iori in several King of Fighters games, and Justice in all non-Accent Core Plus R versions of Guilty Gear XX, off the top of my head.

The last time I know of a character being banned aside from Smash is Soulcalibur IV almost ten years ago

EDIT: Oh yeah, Sub-Zero. Was that because of balance though, or some logistical issue?

Galactus, Orochi Iori, and Justice were intentionally overpowered boss characters so they are a different circumstance.

As a side note, the Smash fanbase is heavily resistant to bans even when it would make sense. In Brawl, they tried to make banning Meta Knight a tournament standard and people flipped out even though basically everyone agreed that he was BS. In Smash 4, the same cycle was happening with Bayonetta and only got derailed because she received harsh nerfs for being so ridiculous. Post-nerf Bayonetta actually won the last EVO, even.

They listed it, though apparently that's a specific mode so I'm not sure why they needed to?

I'll admit I'm not a huge fighting game buff, but I know enough to know that Smash isn't unique in banning characters. I assume they more get the reputation because of items and stages, the former not even being in virtually all other fighting games and the latter not really being "different" enough to matter. (Except for Smash clones, but I don't think any of them really get any serious tournament play afaik.)

Looked it up, Sub-Zero was banned because he came out too close to the tournament, not because he was overpowered or anything.

That strikes me as odd. How good could people get as him even if he was broken?

DLC characters that come out super close to a tournament are typically banned because there isn't enough time to learn how to fight against the character, or to see if something is borked, etc. It's not something that's done to specific characters, it's time-based.

He's playable in a special single player mode, but there might be a glitch that lets you select him normally. Banning a glitch that lets you pick a character you never were supposed to be able to is a lot different from banning a normal character though.

Sub-Zero was banned at EVO because all DLC characters in all games have to have been out for one month before they're allowed at EVO. Nothing to do with being broken, just too new for players to have had a chance to prepare. He'll be legal next year. Again, not the same thing.

DBZ fans will complain about how Tien can beat SSGSS Goku or whatever but literally not a single person in the universe gives a shit about that kind of whining

Fighting fans will be cool with anything as long as it's mildly balanced and encourages player expression, which surprisingly everything shown so far is, even the super OP moves we're discussion

We're talking about current games, not games from 15-25 years ago that can't be updated.

These days games generally get supported with balance updates for at least long enough to iron out anything SO crazy that entire characters need to be banned, and if games DON'T get that kind of support then they're usually not played enough for there to be a relevant tournament scene that would ban things in the first place.

There haven't been big tournaments for that to my knowledge but I don't think Akuma is banned in that one. Not only did they do some rebalancing to all characters, Violent Ken in particular is probably even stronger than him
