The difference now is that games get patched whereas Brawl didn't so when they banned Meta Knight he wasn't coming back. SSB4 doesn't even have any banned characters currently (except Miis sometimes if I understand correctly). I'll be shocked if it literally goes forever without banning a character in a major tournament at some point.
