from the vending machines. I almost never got the actual lunch meals, but they had an a la carte line that I bought my "lunch" from (usually a Smuckers Uncrustable or a big slice of pizza). It just seemed totally normal to me, and yet I always wondered why I was so skinny. Looking back, I was a pretty dumb high schooler, just with different vices from all the kids who drank and smoked weed, who I thought were dumb

I never ate lunch at middle or high school because it looked like the most vile stuff imaginable. If I ever had a couple of bucks in middle school I would get a twix and a soda, and in high school I would leave campus and go get a slice of real pizza. But that wasn't often, either. No wonder I was also skinny.

Man, you sound a lot like me. I guess now that I think about it, part of why I did that was also because the lunches were disgusting. Still, it's probably less disgusting than eating candy all the time. I would go off campus sometimes, but I never really got enough money each day to eat much except for the $1.35/scoop Chinese food which was pretty gross

Our pizza was supposedly Pizza Hut pizza, but it was like some weird school cafeteria version and not real Pizza Hut. Or I could be remembering wrong, maybe it actually was Pizza Hut at one point, but they switched at some point to a more generic brand and there was a huge dip in quality. I just know that it sucked but it was still one of the best things they had. This was pre-Obama, did Michelle make cafeterias have good food or is it just a bunch of vegetables now

I mean, I was technically buying food with it. It's just instead of spending $3 on one fairly unhealthy meal, I spread it out over three very unhealthy items

My high school had a vending machine, but they only sold ice tea, lemonade, and water. No soda or snacks. However, my friends would always sneak into the teacher's lounge (where they had a soda machine) and get drinks from there. Basically you would give them a dollar, and they would get a soda for you, and one for themselves (the soda was 50 cents).

I remember the Taco Bell burritos being fake as well. I remember they had an unusual smell that was unlike anything I've eaten at Taco Bell.

I don't know if my high school even has soda machines anymore. I wanna say that there was a state law banning them, but either way, the school had an extensive reconstruction with most of it being new, so it's possible they never put the vending machines back after they took them out.

In that high school we also had the personal pan pizza Pizza Hut. I would get two and then eat the 2nd after school when I got back home. We had a sandwich place too that I think was Blimpie's but it was meh. There was no real cafeteria there so everything was outside.

My school had Taco Bell and papa johns for lunch. So Id either get two slices of pizza or two chiletos every day. My mom wondered why my lunch money would go so fast...

I was in high school when McDonalds had hamburger Wednesdays. I think I ordered 6 each time.

Probably a state law banning them. Those laws are fucking ridiculous.

This was a long time ago now, but my school had soda vending machines, but in my Junior year they raised the price from $1.00 to $1.25. That extra quarter was a pain in the ass.

The year after I graduated, that town became so shitty that they had to fence off the campus like a prison and demand no more off-campus lunches because there were too many fights and too many kids stealing at the stores around the neighborhood. They also removed the vending machines that year as well so I got out just in time.

i usually got whatever the entree of the day was. they usually had 2 entree options and then a window that served pizza, mexican pizza, nachos and hot dogs every day.

then we had vending machines but our lunch was like $1.50 so i couldn't really spend much at the vending machines.

Now that you mention that, I do remember they also had the Pizza Hut personal pan pizzas. But you couldnt buy them with your lunch allowance money. You had to go through a separate line that was for snacks and sodas and get them there... so I almost never did.

Oh we didn't have something like that. Everything had to be paid for with cash. I think that high school did it that way because it was huge. It even doubled in size after I left.

Eh, I'm for laws like that since I obviously couldn't make good choices for myself... and I was one of the smarter kids in the school. I imagine I'd be so much more fit now if they didn't have vending machines. Plus my high school is four short blocks from a 7-Eleven, so you could always just go there if you really wanted a soda. I don't know if they even allow off-campus lunches anymore though. They banned it in some capacity my senior year but I think it was just for freshmen and they had no real way of enforcing it

As in kids can't even bring their own lunches from home? What about kids with all those food allergies? I would consider it a lot better to say that you can bring in outside food rather then trying to cater to all the nut, gluten, dairy, etc. allergies.

We had our driver ed course in the lounge of the basketball "stadium" area and I spent probably like $50 on chewy runts from the vending machines throughout that course.

The only good thing my school had was the chicken sandwich with bacon and provolone. More expensive and barely edible but at least edible...
The thing that pissed me off was they'd never have consistent wrappers. For example one day it would be hamburgers in a silver wrapper with a red stripe but sometimes the chicken sandwich would be in that color wrapper. You weren't allowed to check and the lunch ladies "didn't know" either. You had to sneak a peak without anyone seeing it before you bought it.
