My biggest question is about insurance. The way I understand it insurance cannot be purchased across state lines? If that's true, what's the logic or point of this? Is there some sort of benefit? Wouldn't we all benefit if such a rule didn't exist?

I just don't understand how it would be feasible or beneficial even if it were legal. The work that would go into an insurance company setting up a network in another state might not be worth the cost and almost certainly couldn't do it cheaper than an already existing network in that state. I'm not basing this off any data though, that's just my speculation.

Is it really that expensive for them? Why are we catering to insurance companies anyway when everyone seems to hate them?

in this case, I believe it is more state governments taht are worried cross-state policies would lead to a race to the bottom in terms of regulations and rules rather than insurance companies, which would probably like that

What I don't understand is how you can buy insurance if you already have a chronic illness

Is your insurance just super expensive? How does that make sense at all? The people who need insurance can't pay for it?

Yeah, everyone, even a lot of republicans, want people with pre-existing conditions to be able to get insurance. But to me logically, while I'm happy for those people to get coverage, I don't see how that can possibly work for the company and why they should have to take on what is obviously a bad investment for them or whatever? Other than jacking up everyone else's insurance, which is basically what has happened to mine since the ACA, so maybe I just answered my own question... >_>

this is why health insurance shouldn't be a profitable industry. there should be a centralized, single payer, non-for-profit system

See now we're opening up a bigger can of worms.
