what?
i never had to "declare a religion" when i joined the boy scouts. (i don't believe in god)

I spoke with my mentor and fellow adult leader. He believes Atheist are allowed into Scouting but may not be able to advance to the higher ranks where they need to explain how they follow the Scout Law of "A Scout is Reverent".

Another adult leader told us once of an Eagle character board that he sat on where the Scout declared he was an Atheist. The board actually was not going to give him his Eagle rank because of that until the Scout managed to explain how he follows the law of "A Scout is Reverent". I have read of Atheist Eagle Scouts though so some boards may have let that slide.

Personally, my only real concern is whether or not girls will be subjected to the same requirements as boys to earn the Eagle rank. The article mentions a program will be created to allow girls to earn the rank of Eagle. If they're not using the same current existing program I can only wonder if it'll be different in some way.

Is there any reason for that concern? I'm not familiar enough with the ranks system to imagine any reason why there'd be separate standards.

That was based on physical standards, though, wasn't it? Does the BSA have some sort of an athletically-based obstacle course that they make people complete to earn Eagle?

There are physical aspects to some Eagle required merit badges (i.e. swimming, life saving, camping, etc.) but I am sure these should be well within the capabilities of most youths.

https://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Merit_badges_required_for_the_Eagle_Scout_rank

https://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Swimming

https://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Lifesaving

https://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Camping

https://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Hiking

https://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Cycling

I don't think the BSA will lower the requirements to become Eagle, I am only curious as to why they would create a new program to allow girls to become Eagles when there's nothing male orientated about the current program, as far as I know.

Wouldn't it be more like their tent is on fire?

It seems fine to me, as long as boys and girls aren't sleeping in the same cabins/tents when they're camping (for obvious reasons).

I always assumed Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts were basically the same, except for some small differences that could be chalked up to random evolution. For instance, I assumed they both did a lot of camping/wilderness stuff. Is that not the case?

They're about as different as you can get, from what I understand.
