http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-3979220/Marijuana-users-abnormally-low-blood-flow-brain-including-Alzheimer-s-danger-zones.html

The patients from California, Washington, Virginia, Georgia and New York all had complex treatment resistant issues, and all underwent single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) a sophisticated imaging study that evaluates blood flow and activity patterns while undergoing concentration tests.

One thousand of the patients were marijuana users. Comparing those patients' brain scans with 100 healthy controls, the researchers saw a stark difference in blood flow levels.

Every marijuana user had significantly lower blood flow in the right hippocampus compared to the controls.

Weed smokers are literally causing themselves to black out and endure permanent brain damage from lack of blood flow just so they can get high. the worst part is they'll argue for it even though this study proves they have literal brain damage.

In terms of personal health, yeah. But between the two, I'd say weed is the lesser evil because it doesn't turn you into an asshole. I'd rather be around people smoking pot than drinking alcohol.

If drinking makes someone an asshole it's just because there an asshole. For me and all my friends it does the exact opposite. Shit the last time I got drunk I called my mom at like 2 am and spent 45 minutes telling her how much I loved her >_>

Not really, except for specifically cited medical benefits most recreational weed users don't say it's just simply good for you. Just that it's not as bad as or at least not notably worse than something like alcohol. Which even that only gets brought up to point out how stupid it is that one is legal and the other isn't.

...the paper itself was published in a pretty good academic journal.

The primary issue with this reporting is that reduced hippocampal perfusion is not at all surprising given the previous results that show decreases in hippocampal volume, as you would expect that a region with less metabolic need would show less perfusion (neurovasular coupling, as it's referred to). This is more or less a reiteration of previous results.

Reporting like that region is being supplied with too little blood is just incorrect.

Actually, what's stupid is even bringing up alcohol in this topic. What the hell does alcohol being bad for you have to do with this study? Yes, chronic alcohol use is also bad, but this doesn't magically make weed any better for you.

That isn't true at all. The Journal of Alzheimer's Disease is not a well-respected medical publication whatsoever. It has a minimal impact score, meaning it is *rarely* cited by any medical professional. They published a so-called study from the Amen Clinic, founded by a self-professed "self-help guru", for fucks sake. The only thing more ridiculous than the Amen Clinic is the Daily Mail, lol.

Yeah but people will use this as proof why weed should be illegal. If alcohol can be legal despite its potential damage, then so should weed. If weed is too dangerous to be legal, then ban alcohol.
