What's the best way to experience it in either TV series, video game, or manga/anime form?

I want something that resembles the ancient Chinese mythology and setting, so none of these modern/futuristic takes. I also want something that balances the comedic and serious tones, so nothing like Stephen Chow's stuff.

Dragon Ball would be the worst one if you want to see Journey to the West.
Sure it is loosely based on it early on, but it isnt all that close

Only other version i can think of off the top of my head is Saiyuki, though that is a bit more modern version of the story, as opposed ti ancient china

I watched Stephen Chow's version and, while I have no other knowledge of the source material, it was quite a bit less silly than the other movies of his I've seen.

Not Dragon Ball lol

I just want a straight up adaption. What's Saiyuki? An anime? Or a game?

I just looked it up and I'm not quite sure it's what I'm looking for. Leather jackets and whatnot, too anime, etc.

That Enslaved: Odyssey to the West game is an interesting take on the story, but not the best way to experience it. Fun game, though.

The movie that came out 4 or 5 years ago was pretty good.

Like i said, it has a few modern things to it.

I was wondering about that in particular. Yeah, I'm mostly wanting to experience it :(

Which one? I see one from both 2010 and 2011. Did it have a specific name?

I found Wei Dong-Chen's graphic novel series. I started his Water Margin adaption which is pretty good.

Still, more recommendations would be great.

But seriously, none of the mangas, anime or movies, hold a candle time the actual book.

Dragonball is the most entertaining adaptation.

Yeah, but I haven't read anything more than a large coloring book in ages. I'm bad at it and it's hard for me to retain anything these days.

My cousin recently watched the monkey King 1 and 2 on Netflix. I'm not too familiar with the source, but they were pretty weird and funny in a bad cheesy movie kind if way.

It's also pretty bad. It's one of those bishonen anime designed mostly to appeal to chicks who imagine pairings between the main characters.

I think I caught part of its run on Syfy but can't remember most of the plot other than the episodic stuff.

Was going to tell you to watch the Stephen Chow version. It's far from his best movie, but I still had fun with it.

He mentioned Chow being too silly for his tastes. To that I can say that the Stephen Chow Journey movie does have some silly moments, its no where near as silly as something like Kung Fu Hustle.
