For the level 45 White Mage Quest, we go on a pilgrimage to Pray at all final locations of A-Towa-Cant's ashes.. except one of them was stolen by the Redbellies who we took care of Unfortunately the Robe can't be enchanted since the Urn was disturbed and is no longer magic or holy or whatever.

More importantly HELL YES I HAVE HOLY!



On the Warrior side of the level 45 Quest, we have to go each location where the legendary Warrior armor is located.. and for some reason all of them have a guardian monster lurking nearby






On our way to get the last piece though, I participated in a 3 part FATE quest where we had to escort an engineer to the place we fought the Azure Dragoon, then protect him while he sets up the cannon Bertha... then finally fight THIS thing




Meet Svara, and holy **** is Svara tough. Not only does it have loads of HP, it has huge AoE attacks, lobbing ones, cone ones and a 0 CT jump attack that pushes everything away. It took me and two others before we took it down. I'm reasonably certain i wasn't supposed to lure Svara out to the bridge though. Maybe we were supposed to use the cannon?



Compared to that dragon, the last guy guarding the armor was a wimp. Too bad we don't get to use the armor though since Curious Gorge took it from us, saying he doesn't trust anybody with it. Seems it makes anybody with the merest hint of bloodlust crazy. He's going to consult his tomes again before letting us try it

So uh I beat Garuda

Decided to pick and choose which pics to upload



Enterprise is FINALLY ready and we pierce through Garuda's barrier. Time to enter the Howling Eye



Garuda has a pretty fun personality. Psychotic ***** full of herself basically.

In battle though... it got hectic and I forgot to take pictures, sorry. It's actually pretty simple/straightforward, or at least as far as I understand it. There are 4 stone pillars here and the arena is surrounded by a vortex of wind. Garuda sometimes take potshots at non-tanks, but hiding behind the stone pillars protects you. And then she sometimes flies up and at that point you have to remember from which direction she flew up from... or get blasted by a blast of wind if the stone pillar doesn't block it.

Later she drops feather thingies. I don't know what they do if left alone, but everybody scrambled to get rid of them so I toss a few Aeros here and there to help. Then Garuda flew straight up and slam right in the middle of the arena and destroyed all the pillars, forcing everyone to rush her. All in all, it went a lot better than Titan did.



After the battle we found out Garuda cheated though. She took Kobolds and Amalj'aa hostage and have an entire cadre of Ixals praying to her, as well as previously stuffing her with an absurd amount of crystals. She's basically immortal unless we take care of the Ixals first. Fail and she's going to go and wipe out the Sylphs, Sahagins, and Amalj'aa immediately.

But then two things happened.





***** tried to convert us, which backfired and allowed us to extract the green (wind?) crystal from her generous bosom, completing the circle. Unless there's a 7th in the middle.



Then this bozo showed up. I think he appeared way back when the armored dudes showed up in that cutscene. Also, he's Cid's replacement Father figure or something. I dunno. He proceeds to goad Garuda, who promptly kills her hostages and made THIS happen



HOLY **** SHE FORCED SUMMONED BOTH OF THEM! She was about to eat both of them when THIS HAPPENED!




HOLY **** IT'S ULTIMA WEAPON!

... Eikon? Really?

ANYWAY HE JUST OHKO'D IFRIT AND TITAN THE BIT GARUDA'S HEAD OFF HOLY ****

Naturally, we cheesed it at that point. But **** that noise.

Alphinaud says that The Primals are no longer a priority since the Garlean Empire now posses the ancient Allagan weapon Ultima, designed specifically to counter Primals by draining their Aether. The Beast tribe most likely won't attempt to resummon their gods before taking care of it first... like what we're doing. But first, we're going back to the Waking Sands to rebuild it.



Also, I befriended the Amalj'aa tribe Brotherhood of the Ash. There's a female MI'qote among them but hey.

The first half of the Garuda fight revolves entirely around those pillars. Her AoEs can damage the pillars, so standard practice is to tank her all the way to the north and point her out of the arena so she doesn't hit them. The feathers attack the pillars and can destroy them if they're left alone.

This is bad for two reasons. First of all, as you noted she occasionally teleports and does attacks that you can hide behind the pillars to mitigate entirely. Second, about halfway through the fight she teleports to the center of the arena and does her ultimate (I think it's called Aerial Blast; it's the one where she screams about how THE RECKONING COMES or whatever). If there aren't enough rocks left in the pillars when she does this, it's an instant wipe.

So for DPS (and the healer, if they have spare GCDs) the first priority is always the feathers. The tank can't deal with them - they have to keep Garuda on the edge of the arena or else she'll clip the pillars with her AoEs and defeat the purpose of killing the feathers.

We reunite with Yda and Y'shtola, the latter informing us that the others (other than Thancred. Where the hell is he?) are captured at the Mor Dhana Imperial citadel.




Along the way we rescue Wedge and Biggs. The latter being surrounded by Imperials who kept calling wave after wave of men and magitek armors. I had to toss a heal to Biggs sometimes, it got busy with all the damn AoEs

And now we're preparing to infiltrate the citadel by posing as Imperials. Sweet.

Just as a heads up, the two end-of-ARR dungeons coming up relatively soon (at 50, naturally), Castrum Meridianum and The Praetorium, are very... poorly designed.

They're 8 man dungeons (the only of their kind), and have a butt load of cutscenes in them. Like, 20+ minutes of cutscenes DURING the dungeons. Naturally, this leads to people not wanting to wait around for newbies to watch the cutscenes if you do it with randoms, meaning you'll either miss the entire dungeon or be forced to skip cutscenes. I dunno if you've found an FC yet, but if you have, most FCs are pretty willing to run 'newbie runs' with their members so that they can experience them. Or you could maybe throw up a party finder and see if anybody will do it, if FC isn't an option.

Running them with randoms sucks really bad because most people just run through the dungeons.

They're the only dungeons that do this, because SE learned their lessons from this. The finale dungeons of Heavensward and Stormblood are both quite a bit better designed.

Seconding all of this. If you end up having to run the last dungeons with randoms, make sure you catch all the cutscenes by going to an inn room and checking out the Unending Journey - it lets you replay all the cutscenes from quests you've completed.

Basically on the Updates screen, you slide and hold down your finger from the top of the screen and then let go. This will force it to check for updates manually.

Oh hey there's a DQ collab quest in XIV

As I predicted, the man beast was indeed Curious Gorge's brother, Broke Mountain (are you ****ing kidding me)




What I did NOT expect was Curious Gorge turning on us and being the real final boss. HWAT A TWEEST! I would have liked to fight Broke Mountain first though.




What follows is an epic battle... in theory. Yeah, my connection went super crappy and the battle was... well, it was a special kind of hell. How the battle should go is that we two Warriors trade blows and Gorge unleashes massively powerful AoE attacks, and as the fight goes on our Inner Fury and Inner Rage manifests themselves and annoy us further. Inner Rage really damages us, while killing an Inner Fury heals the attacker.

How it played it basically an insane game of chicken where I have to gauge how many attacks I really took and breaking off from the fight to heal, as well as timing my combos so they actually do trigger.




But the battle is won and Warrior is done



Meanwhile, on the White Mage side of things, we've finally started doing the Quietening.



The Guardian Tree isn't having any of it however, and in its rage it sent forth wave after wave of plants and wisps to get rid of us



Okay I was not expecting us to actually call forth A-Towa-Cant from the dead to help us.



The battle went a hell of a lot smoother than Warrior's did, though it did have a criteria in that we need to keep the Guardian Tree healed while it keeps sending in wave after wave of minions to annoy us.



Sadly A-Towa-Cant has to go back to being dead, but at least the tree is satisfied. White Mage done.

I've also finished the DQ quest



Holy **** they're really doing it. They're actually showing us what the Puff Puff of DQ fame ACTUALLY IS!

A lot of things happened during our rescue of the Scions at Centri... the one in Mor Dhona



We get a sentient Magitek Armor, Reaper!



Me, Biggs, and Wedge infiltrated the base using the armor and stolen uniform and rescued the Scions Minfilia, Tataru (who Wedge has a crush on evidently), Papalymo, and Urianger.



Yda and Y'shtola broke into the base and stalled Whitey Armor...



... while we break through the last line of defense. This particular fight was annoying because the damn magitek Vanguards are constantly shielded, and we have to run around the battlefield and destroy the shield generators hidden somewhere.



And then Minfilia's Limit Burst from Exvius happened. It was awesome! Next all of the Scions jumped off to the cliff behind us and rode The Enterprise with Alphinaud and Cid to freedom...



But Reaper sacrificed itself to let us go.



Also this thing is taking potshots at us. Hi Gaius!

There's actually 9 roulettes in total but you probably won't ever see the 9th unless you play a TON.

Leveling, Trial, Main Scenario, 50/60, Guildhest, Frontline, Alliance Raid, Expert, and Mentor.

Guildhests stop being a thing post level 45 though so most people don't regularly do them, and Main Scenario is really only worth doing if you need poetics.

Now that you've finished the vanilla ARR story, you have a TON of new dungeons and raids and stuff that opened up.

I HIGHLY recommend you do the Hildibrand quests, they are hilarious. It starts at Wymond in Ul'dah.

Level 50 dungeons are littered around everywhere, and there's like 15 of them or something (not the actual number). Some of them are part of the post-ARR main scenario.

You've already started the Hard Mode primals (which aren't actually that hard), and after those the Extreme versions open up (though you won't be able to find people doing these legit much anymore, most old 'hardcore raid content' is just done unsync'd by max level players).

Speaking of raid content, you can do The Binding Coil of Bahamut now. Though again, you almost certainly won't be able to experience it outside of max level players doing it unsync'd. It's well worth taking an hour or two to do it for the story, though. But you might wanna wait til you're a bit higher level.

You'll also have the ARR 24 man raid (24 mans are all casual raids in FF14, as in you can pug them), The Crystal Tower, to do. This one you'll actually be able to do at-level, because of the Alliance Raid Roulette. It starts in Mor Dhona.

Anyway, unfortunately the post-ARR plot is... pretty bad until you get near the end (where it gets amazing). There's 100 quests between the end of 2.0 and the start of Heavensward, and a LOT of the first like 3 patches of content (about 50-60 quests) is really bad filler.

Thankfully its the last egregious bit of filler in the entire story, because they really upped their game in Heavensward and Stormblood and cut out a lot of the menial filler quests that nobody liked.

Aww yeah max rank for me and my Squadron

The first of the 8 man dungeons I had to do was Cape Westwind, where we had to take down the first of the 4 armored baddies, Rhitahtyn. After some choice words glorifying being a subjugated... err, subject, the fight begins



I have no ****ing idea what is going on here. I think at a certain point Rhitahtyn called for a Magitek Missile bombardment and called for his minions to help, but for the most part he's just a durable punching bag.



With his death, the plan proceeds smoothly. Without Rhitahtyn, the chain of command of the Garlean frontline collapse and we managed to shutdown their Magitek Transporter as well. The Maelstrom took over the island Castrums to the southeast, while the Twin Adders took over the Castrum to the far east and blocking reinforcements from Mor Dhana from heading towards the Thanalan Castrums. That leaves us and the Immortal Flames to invade...



Castrum Meridianum. We invade and took down the Searchlights that signals the gigantic ship up above, while we fight things like



The Black Eft.



Cid turns up shortly after to inform us that the Ultima Weapon is indeed inside the Praetorium, the building inside that huge energy dome. To get inside, we need to disable the energy towers nearby. He has us do down a disposal Chute while he commandeers the Black Eft for himself. After we took care of one of the towers though, this thing dropped on us



After taking care of the prize that stupid ass airship gave us, Cid went all Kool Aid Man on us and burst through a wall.



That triggered the alarm though, so we took shortcuts as Cid blasts his way through sealed doors until we're confronted by this



After taking him down, Cid uses the Black Eft to destroy the 2nd tower, but that completely depletes its power reserves. We have to continue on our own. When we reach the 3rd one though, that bloody airship is waiting for us, along with 8 Magitek Colossus on the ground.




Fortunately there's an oh so very convenient anti-air cannon nearby.



And luckily it took down the 3rd tower on its way down.



Livia is maaaaaaaad




Livia is unique in that we can't actually kill her by whacking her with our sticks. Nope, we gotta use the cannons nearby. For some reason activating the ammunition pile calls forth Deathclaw enemies who helpfully load up the nearest cannons with ammo. That's when Livia calls for minions to disrupt us though. After a lot of artillery bombardment, Livia is finally forced to fight us on foot.






*****es be crazy.

The Praetorium awaits... but we have to walk all the way out of here and to the Enterprise. Since we can't reach it on foot. Welp.

Crystal Tower should have opened up as well. Do that if you want to experience a 24-man raid.

After climbing up to the Control Terminal we actually run into Gaius, who told Cid his father was sorry about how he treated him but couldn't escape Meteor's thrall (I have no idea what this is about), and tried to get us to join him. When he refused, he ran away and had a Colossus mk II fight us. After the fight, Cid stayed behind to guide us from this place.



Holy crap Maggie our sentient Reaper Magitek Armor is here!



THE MAGNIFICENT EIGHT RIDE AGAIN! Riding it was fun, the #2 command basically OHKOs the normal enemies and everyone just spammed it against the Proto Ultima Weapon Arms that block our path



Sadly, we had to deplete its energy core to blast open a door blocking our way to...



Nero.



Who promptly had a hissy fit. Seems he can't stand being number 2 to Cid's genius and plans to dissect us to add to Ultima Weapon. Speaking of, Gaius is off activating a fully powered one as we fight.



Throughout the fight Nero wields a huge hammer and summons Deathclaws and electrocutes the outer ring of the arena.



Unfortunately an ill-timed power surge allowed Nero to escape. Good news is the Maelstrom and the Twin Adders are on the way to bolster the Immortal Flames in keeping the main body of Garlean troops away from the Praetorium. Oh well, onwards and downwards.



Gaius dropped down out of ****ing nowhere (seriously, we were at that slanted lift thing. There was nowhere for him to drop down from that isn't stupid), made his spiel about the Eorzean Gods being the same as the primals and only he had the brains to rule Lylat- I mean the strength to rule Eorzea, then we fight.



Honestly I didn't notice any gimmicks. I just poked him until he died.




Gaius calmly left us afterwards and then rode on The Ultima Weapon for the final battle, as the service elevator rises to the top. I assume he wants to use it on the battlefield after taking care of us.



I'm... honestly confused what the mechanics of this fight is. Every so often Hydaelin's voice would appear and tell us to look towards the light in order to pierce Ultima's steel, but I have no ****ing idea what the hell she's talking about. Also as the fight progresses Ultima goes into Primal Mode and uses the essences he stole, but we keep damaging it and forcing the essence to be torn away.




lol I love how whiny Gaius sounds at the end there. That's when Lahabrea appeared however, and informed Gaius that the crystals are what protected us. Then he unleashed the true power of Ultima Weapon:





Mother****ing Ultima. Seems Lahabrea wanted Ultima Weapon to help his god be reborn... what ever that means. Then he left leavin

I didn't get any good pictures, but Ultima got nasty at this bit. Halfway through the fight he starts launching Magitek Bits that shoot out lasers that hurt, and there a bunch of them crisscrossing the entire battlefield, and it's possible more than 1 will have you in their paths.



Also towards the end Lahabrea forced Gaius to charge up another Ultima, but fortunately we killed it before it could fire it.



Gaius dies




The Ultima Weapon is destroyed (in a hilariously pathetically small Ultima)



But Lahabrea remains.



He's basically just a punching bag that taunts us that if we kill him, so will this body. Hydaelin says it's ok though and to just ignore Lahabrea. If you say so disembodied voice boss... and then things got trippy









So that happened. I guess Thancred is no longer possessed or something?



Maggie to the rescue! Good Bot. Best Friend.



It's totally Chaos.

This dungeon's gimmick is that thing below the title. It's a dangerous Mold Colony that triggers Hecteyes into appearing from smalle colonies. Also some poisonous tile that disappear when you kill the flies



This guy is like Parasite Cage from KH. He can swallow somebody, and we have to destroy the Maw to release them.



This one was weird. Basically Arioch refuses to land and fight unless we kill enough of his prey enemies to entice him to stay and fight us. I don' know why we don't just ignore it, but okay.



Huh. I was not expecting Diabolos here. His gimmick is still DARKNESS and gravity, and he also has a NIghtmare attack that puts the entire party to sleep. When there are too many Gravity Orbs near him, he needs to be moved out of them because those times combined hurt. Also, we need to dodge his Ultimate by opening two Voidgates with the same pattern, which suck us in and make us intangible to Diabolos's attacks.

The first part of the Ultima Weapon fight is basically a glorified cutscene. You beat the crap out of it while it calls out the primals one by one. I don't think actually need to do damage, it's just on a timer until the actual cutscene starts.

The second part is actually pretty interesting, and gets remixed into a harder version you'll unlock soon enough.

It's worth noting that the MSQ dungeons are hilariously easy now because almost everyone doing them is geared three full endgames ahead of where they're intended to be done. The boss mechanics actually mean something when you only have 3000 HP and aren't doing enough damage to end every fight a minute after it begins.

Also, welcome to the worst part of the story. The next 80-90 story quests are mostly a boring slog. Things do pick up in the immediate run up to Heavensward, and the story from then on is pretty fantastic. I suggest you don't try to speedrun the story, just do a few quests a day and play the level 50 dungeons and trials in between.

The Crystal Tower 24 man raids are available now. The questline to unlock the first one is kind of grindy, but the raids themselves are easy and fun (easy because everyone doing them hilariously outgears them).

The Binding Coils of Bahamut are available too. Here's the thing - the Coils are actually super hard if you do them with level sync because they were never intended to be done with random players. The mechanics are significantly more complicated than anything you've encountered so far and are meant to be done with a well-coordinated group, ideally with voice chat. With level sync the fights are arguably harder now than they were on release due to how skills have been shifted around over two expansions (many jobs are lacking important tools at level 50 now). Most of the time when people do the Coils nowadays it's with level 70 characters unsynced, which makes up for the lack of coordination on most fights (a few still require planning and forethought because they have mechanics you can't just brute force your way through).

That said, the story is very good and you can usually find some people willing to run through them on Party Finder. Make sure you mention that you have the first timer's bonus in your recruitment message.
