Do you think students should be allowed to speak in another language with each other at school?

A White North Carolina substitute teacher flipped his lid when he told a student to "go back to where you speak Spanish" after he heard the student talking in spanish during class....and now that teacher is FIRED!!

Gary Atta is facing accusations of racism after another student recorded the altercation in class that shows Atta standing over a male student in a desk yelling "Go back to where you speak Spanish if you don't want to speak English"

Students then gasp after hearing the comments where the student replies "that's racist" and Gary says "Okay, i'm a racist right"

It happened when the spanish speaking male student wearing an orange shirt was speaking to a friend in spanish and Gary lost his marbles after hearing the language at South Mecklenburg High School who then approached him to tell him to STOP speaking in spanish..

The school has a third of a population that's Hispanic..with another 26% that's black and 36% white

The student who recorded it wants to remain anonymous and said "It's not right, this is racism"

Senior Edwin Alarcon said "For a teacher to just put a student down like that in school where you're supposed to feel safe, it's just not correct"

Principal Maureen Furr reviewed the video and fired the teacher immediately and said "At South, we seek to create a safe and respectful environment for students and staff and promote respectful interaction for all"

Do you think student should be allowed to speak another language at school? let's see what people think

Of course. Some students are more than capable of speaking English and another one or two languages. I see nothing with talking in another language so long as one is still capable of communicating with fellow students or teachers in English when the situation calls for it. Hell, I'd imagine in some cases people might want to talk in another language so they can have "private" conversations. Another thing, most schools offer foreign language as an elective. What if said student is merely practicing.

Well, no, it's not explicitly racist. Not wanting people to speak foreign languages isn't racist in and of itself, even if there often is overlap between racist people and people with that sort of mindset. Worst you could call it is xenophobic.

Who poses like that? I guess he's pointing in the direction he wants the kid to go back to? Which is... up?

Sounds like the teacher is upset because he only knows English. And the student probably speaks English better than the teacher.

Not racist, nationalist. Otherwise don't really care about the story. While firing him would seem extreme, he's only a sub anyway.

That's a somewhat weird exchange.

if a teacher tells the kid no spanish in his class room I feel the kid should follow orders, but the way this dude handled it, just no.

only reason I say kid show follow orders if teacher tells him not to though is speaking in a foreign language could be used to get around rules around talking about inappropriate things, or hell even talking about doing something later or something already done that would be against the rules.

but as said this particular guy didn't handle the situation well at all.

a ton of hmong students did the same here. And I may be in the minority here, but I think other languages should be limited at school. Instead of uniting the school in learning it promotes segregation and makes getting along with other groups harder when you have a group of students that exclusively speak a language no one but them and maybe one or two teachers understand.

Either that or if you have a large population of students that speak that second language, maybe have a class teaching that language at a younger age.

On the bus or in a class specifically intended for those kids(ESL), it's fine.

But really, it's not appropriate anywhere else. Kids are dumb, angry, and potentially dangerous. It's generally a good idea to know what they are saying.

well damn, just learned about the Hmong people for the first time the other from a movie. and now I see them being mentioned here. good movie too, think it was called Gran Turino. plot is basically old white racist dude eventually softens up and befriends his foreign neighbors. ending is quite unexpected.

Pretty good movie. I grew up in an area with a lot of refugees. We got along just fine, but doing a group project became a headache when every 5 minutes half your group would lapse into another language while the other half were left to wonder if they are discussing the project or making comments about classmates. And by the end of high school a majority of the hmong students self segregated themselves.

I grew up in a heavily mexican neighborhood so I almost know how you feel, but aside from not understanding what they where saying they mostly kept to themselves. now it did become a problem when I got a job their and I was by far the minority as a white male in a place mostly mexican. one dude seemed like he was intentionally trying to piss me off, he could speak perfect english yet would speak spanish to me when trying to ask or tell me to do something.
