I've been using my friends fancy new PS4 controller since mine are old and crummy. He came home to visit from college across state today and I gave him his controller back.

Come to find out that games like GTAV and Cuphead only let you use the first controllers you plug in for some fucked up reason. Not even reinstalling the games fixes the issue.

Use an Xbox One controller instead, since it is natively compatible with Windows.

Reinstall the software that the controller uses.

what are your actual symptoms beyond just "only let you use the first controllers you plug in"

some blind guesses:
- you've lost write access to the config file, so reconfiguring the controls just keeps failing. not likely, but not impossible.
- you're pressing start or A on one controller before the other
- or similarly you have them both connected at the same time and one is overriding the other

a general guideline that games often use (and some games are obligated to use) is that there should be a 'start' screen, and whichever control device you activate from the start screen determines which one the game will use (more true of console games maybe, where PC games might just use an options screen).

This is such a highly unusual (and frankly implausible) issue I'm not sure any of us can begin to diagnose it. If you're using Steam, I know it added native PS4 controller support a while back (which might be what you're confusing with native Windows support in post #8; no such support exists for the PS4 controller), so check the Steam Controller settings.

steam works fine. it's just cuphead (windows store) and gtav (rockstar launcher) that are giving me issues.

deleting the damn config files would fix everything, dammit

you said the one you had to return was PS4. I guess the one you're trying to use now is your own PS4 controller?

in what way does it not work? I don't have a PS4 controller so I don't know how it connects or have any way of testing it.

is it wired or wireless?

yes, the difference was that his was a painted old model controller while mine is a new model. He brought it back over and it works perfectly with his, but will not connect to mine on either game. I have no clue if it has to do with the model or of it's just trying to find the other controller. I'm downloading Cuphead on my laptop to see.

deleting a games configuration file just resets all settings for the game to default and remakes the config file. it absolutely cannot make a game stop working period.

you know for a fact i'm right.

deleting game configuration files is the fix to every settings fuck up. it literally cannot cause the game to quit working.

the fact it's in the registry means nothing. i've deleted mine, too, so i could get co-op settings to function right with a keyboard and a controller.

go look it up. search for how to fix settings in a specific game. it'll always say delete the config or settings file.

it depends on the game. normally what it will say is "always remember to make a backup before changing anything", and sometimes there will be a default.ini that you can copy to restore defaults. and if the game is programmed for it, it will auto-generate a default or copy one from default.ini, etc. or if the game is not programmed for it, you'll just get a CTD. it depends on the game.

but even so the right advice is not "just delete your config file", at best it's "rename your config file to .old" or something.

I do agree that the guy instantly saying it broke both games and then instantly forgetting he ever said that seems pretty phony, especially without asking for help either way, and without giving us almost any information whatsoever about his problem. but if he's fake, then considering your behaviour I wouldn't be surprised if it's just you talking to yourself in this thread.

everyone knows i wouldn't touch a ps4 controller

that being said, each ps4 controller has the exact same firmware, since theirs don't update. so the fact that one controller would work and others wouldn't because they're older also makes no sense.

on steam, the ds4 is a steam controller in everything but name. it's possible that it's locked to that specific controllers ID i suppose, but that shouldn't lock another controller from being able to function.
