Yes, Zell serves as comic relief on a regular basis (although it's usually just him playing an overreacting straight man), but I think that's different from just being a comic relief character.

Which is not widespread popularity, which rewards characters who can be the highest on average across a populartion's favorite character lists.

Link is not most gamefaqs users favorite character, but he is the most liked by just about everyone.

Top 5 is murky waters.

And yes, I always push the same character just about every time to the best of my ability. If you take a look at this placements you can see that: 35, 44, 30, 38, 23, 34, 25, 34, 49.

This takes out his boot (which shows how great he is without me) when I was on hiatus and his 8th place finish I already mentioned. You'd be hard pressed to find a character with a more static statline than my #1. It's because no matter what this talk of "anyone can do it!" or "save mys favor #1s", it just isn't true for everyone.

I think the difference is you haven't had a consistent group of people giving him #1 priority year after year. If you did his stats/placements would be better. Lightning is where she is now mostly because she's had the same support group year after year all giving her top priority.

There have only been 18 contests with 17 winners. Under the right circumstances I think anyone outside of the extreme outliers (ie LARG) can make a finals run.

Anomalies aren't something up for debate really. Statistically speaking, the facts speak for themselves. If Seymour doesn't fall between 20-50, and most likely in the 30's, I will be shocked.

I think my top 5 as of right now is Ramza, Cecil, Delita, Balthier, and... maybe Laguna or Cid?

Well you only need two people (or one trading) to drag someone to 50, and you main him every year so of course he's going to make it that far.

Then I'm not certain. Most likely Cloud at 3. The 4 and 5 spot is up for grabs at any given time, probably between a group of Sephiroth, Tifa, Auron, Rufus and Basch.

Seymour falls there because he doesn't have the support. Very few people give him any sort of priority and you could even argue he's less fortunate than other villains because he's from a game where nearly every major character is well liked. Lightning sorta has it easy in that respect because nobody here cares about XIII's villains and Snow, Sazh, Fang and Vanille don't really perform well either. If Seymour had like 5 people giving him #1 priority and trading for him it should be enough to get him his best placement? I forget how many we need, but it's 1-2 all the way to top 50 so 10 should be good for like top 20 I think.

There are tons of popular characters that could be doing really well here if they could keep steady support. Auron and Sephiroth got destroyed this year and other popular guys like Tidus and Balthier seem to be at all time seals this contest

I mean, yeah... obviously. I'm saying that this doesn't happen, and it happens for Lightning. Please understand.

I mean you need allies once you can't solo trade anymore. I don't think anyone's suggesting you can get to #1 off the back of one or two people.

One of the most disappointing plotlines in how it amounted to nothing. Seeing his face before enter Sin got me so hyped back then.

I don't remember it being promised, but he had been putting up rounds at noon for like 30 rounds and then the last one went up at like 2.

It's the kind of villain I enjoy. The tragic and twisted villain molded by traumas in his life. He's a half-breed, forced into exile as a child because Jyscal mistakenly thought that by fathering a child with a human that he could bridge the gap between their cultures. Instead, the disgust for it at the time was so bad that Seymour couldn't even live among either of the cultures. Then his mother has the idea that Seymour will be accepted more if he can possess a powerful aeon unlike others to battle Sin with. So as a young child Seymour has to go through the trauma of being an outcast without anyone to turn to but his mother, and then that person effectively kills herself in front of him.

I just really like that arc, and I like his views on life and death in Spira. He really believes he's doing the "right thing" for Spira, and unlike most Final Fantasy villains he's not really a power-seeker or would be conqueror. His only desire for power is so that he can fulfill his goal of ending suffering, by ending life, because there was no way to stop Sin's rebirth anyway so he believed. He's one of the few villains in these games I feel has a real motive behind what he's doing that actually makes some sort of twisted sense to it. Plus he has a fantastic voice actor and I like his design.

Eh, the game doesn't treat Seymour as a joke at all. I mean was I let down by that final encounter? Maybe, but not because of Seymour. That's just how the game is written. I mean, I don't think he's meant to be viewed in any sort of joking manner because he has one of the most difficult storyline battles there is and he always feels like a credible threat to the party. To me, he feels like THE threat because you don't know what he's really up to until you've played the game. Sin is just this big destructive thing, you know what's it up to really. Not to mention he has an incredible boss battle theme I think everyone can agree on.

Ultros vs Marche was the final the whole contest was building to.

raytan just sidestepped it and Ashe ate a fucking rout as a result.

I mean that's what I'm criticizing. I like Seymour. But it definitely hurts him that he's not given a more prominent role. The repeated boss fights still kind of feel like he's the one following the party and they keep swatting him down. And I maintain if he got the final boss fight he deserved it would have really raised the stakes instead of the drawn out auto-life...thing we got. (Love the music there too though, great feel, but the gameplay doesn't reciprocate at all).

I want to point out this is actually the recurring theme of Final Fantasy. Seymour isn't an exception, he's another line of nihilistic FF villains. Of course not all of them are like that all the time, but Xande, Exdeath, Kefka, and Kuja end up in the same self-destructive space. The suicidal villain that wants to take everyone down with him speaks to a kind of deeply human place to me somehow.

And yeah they're backstories aren't really fleshed to tell you why they feel this way, but I just don't want people to sell the series short. Seymour is the evolution of that idea more than the originator.

Plus I think it's neat these disparate stories even originating from the NES days can have a subtle semi-regular motif.

Kuja is based exactly on Xande from III btw, who decides to want to destroy the world when his immortality is lost
