If you don't cheat you are allotted so little money that you can't afford anything better than a dilapidated hovel. You have no perks. You might be lucky enough to get a crappy job you never wanted. You can't afford to buy things that will help you build skills. So you sit around in your dingy shit house and cry until death comes and takes you away

uncanny valley indeed

You should try the legacy challenges! You start with around 1,000 simeleons on a totally empty lot and have to build up as you go along. The goal is to build a family dynasty that reaches 10 generations.

I never cheat, start off really small and become super rich by the end of the first season (though this is sims 3, longest life with 28 day seasons)

I turn off aging when I play, I played the original a lot and hated aging when they added it.

I remember playing the original sims all you had to do was make all of your characters with 0 in each Stat and then there was a potion you could brew at something you could build to reverse all your stats and make them max. No cheating involved

You learn skills at the library or other community lots. Take baths at community lots, too. If it's TS3 you can hunt for bugs or rocks to sell until you can afford a bed and maybe some walls!

Honestly, I found it pretty easy to go from the whatever 20k you start with to being rich at the top of your field.

But maybe it's because I have white privilege.

It's pretty easy to cheese those games if you know what to do. I use to just crank out art, and books to get by. Basically Philip K. Dick Mode.

In The Sims 2 for PS2, the espresso machine was totally broken that it is almost like a cheat. Drinking coffee from it makes it so you never have to go to sleep to restore energy, and you only need to sit in a chair to restore comfort. That would be awesome if you could stay awake without any repercussions like that IRL.
