Not really. Even if you find them bland, you can't really say there are similar characters to most of that game's cast in FF elsewhere.

Well, the problem is that FF4 has a giant cast, but most of them are such minor characters (IIRC, only in the remake did the characters who sacrifice themselves actually come back) like Cid P., Yang, Tellah, Edward, Porom, Palom, FuSoYa. Which leaves the main part, which consists of lovable rogue Edge (my favorite character, but nothing special), generic female lead Rosa, cool, but still generic badass turned good guy Kain, generic paladin Cecil, and Rydia, who has an interesting story, but isn't THAT big of a personality.

I did put Terra at risk this round, but I'm having fun editing Eiko quotes into pleas for saves so she has climbed a bit higher on my priority list

I like Edge and Kain quite a bit too in addition to Cecil. Both have pretty interesting side stories

Rydia is pretty good though I don't have a soft spot for her like other users do

Even Rosa is cool. She's just a love interest for Cecil but at least she can use a freaking bow and arrow.

It's more prevalent in the early years though. FF1-4, plus Bartz and Lenna from FF5. All pretty generic and forgettable. Mostly.

I agree Rosa is cool. Not only does FF not have many bow and arrow users. Then add fact that she's a white mage. Granted she is super boring storywise. But I like her concept.

Rydia is a statistical anomaly in a lot of ways. She's the only character in the top ten of the STATS with a boot. She's one of the rare characters with a championship and a boot (although that's becoming increasingly less rare; we're up to 7 of those now). She's also one of two characters with a first place and a last place finish, as well as one of two characters with multiple finals appearances and a boot. Her performances are overwhelmingly great, which is why she's able to cancel out the rare bad ones. This is her first bottom half finish in 11 contests and only her third overall. Rydia has 14 top 25 finishes in 18 appearances, with 8 of those being top 10s and five of those being top 5s. She's only had one contest that wasn't a top 25 or a bottom half finish, and that was last year.

This poor finish hurts Rydia a decent bit as you can image. She drops from 78.90% to 76.57%, falling from 5th past Zidane, Celes, Vivi, and Terra to land at 9th place. It's an even bigger slide in the New Era, as she slips from 84.42% to 76.52%, going below Rikku, Cloud, Tidus, Yuna, and Vivi to fall from 7th to 12th place. Yuna now joins the New Era top ten.

I don't particularly expect RPG characters to have character growth. If it happens on someone I already like and is written well, then it's a bonus. But yeah just give me a likable cast (even if they are largely static) and I'm happy.

i mean thats cool and all just not going to really cut it. i dunno i expect more out of rpg's i guess in terms of characterization. but to say like hur hur ff4 bad cast when it's like........most ff games have shit casts it's literally baffling to me. they all suck.

Well, I'd say FFVIII dedicated itself to developing a handful of characters and pretty much neglected the rest of them (The group dynamic evolves a lot over the course of the story, but that's true of most FFs).

But it's still one of my favorite casts because the characters are still fun, whether they're dynamic or static.

Uh, well. He goes from being a dutiful monk to understanding the flaws in his religion. He dies for this, but doesn't accept that and wants to fulfill his promise to find a way to break the cycle. His former life and his current one is a pretty big part of his story, such as the way people react to him and the way he in turn reacts to them.

RPGs are built for their stories. I mean, I'm at a loss of what you expect from a video game. They're usually among the most well done games storywise. Usually the characters are more developed than film characters, but maybe less so than TV characters since they have tons more time on screen.
