Then what about Obama's other inflammatory remarks? What's your excuse for claims he's given on the record, be they completely uninformed ones which incited racial tensions (Beer Summit, "If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon," etc) or were just flat-out wrong ("It's easier for inner-city kids to get their hands on a gun than a book.")? What about when Obama went on a late-night tv show and proceeded to make joke about handicapped kids? (The last of which, by the way, is far worse than criticizing fully-functionally adults who choose to be jackasses.)

We are in a completely different ballgame now. Trump says things every day that would have been showstoppers before his presidency because we are just overloaded with insanity and lies. I don't even see what's offensive about the Trayvon comment. When Trump gives a speech I'm humiliated as a citizen of this country. If you honestly can't see the difference in decorum, thoughtfulness, and maturity between the two presidents then there's nothing I can say.

lolwut? You mean like how "If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor" -- a completely bald-faced lie which Obama and his cronies knew and for which he was busted -- derailed Obama's career by... what, giving him a re-election? Politicians haven't been held accountable for shit since 1992 when GHWB's "Read my lips: No new taxes" came back to bite him in the ass. If you can't see that, you need to put down the Kool-Aid.

All of which overlooks how many "controversies" in this day and age are manufactured by the press, which has been the case since the 24-hour news cycle first became a thing and has only accelerated as the media has been increasingly driven by ideological agendas. For instance, it should surprise nobody when a Clinton ally buys the WaPo then uses it to slam Clinton's enemies, running frequent pieces against Sanders and Trump without any regard for impartiality or balance.

free speech is funny in that it only applies to what the government can do to you.

that's it.

no one else. you tell a business owner you're going to punch him in the taint, he can kick you out. because he does not need to follow the first amendment, because he isn't part of the government.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

right there.

it means that you can't get in trouble from the government for what you say (lol you absolutely can though). just as you're free to call trump a douchy queef bag, so is he in calling you a jackass bitch king. now if you called him a cobblestone dick smasher, and he threw you in jail for it, then that would be a violation of free speech.

a more focused wording:
Freedom of speech is the right to articulate one's opinions and ideas without fear of government retaliation or censorship, or societal sanction

not that i'm defending it because I do hate outright lies as campaign promises, but I want you to list me all the presidents to have kept all their promises. I assure its a very very short list.

when running for pres. all they ever do is tell you what they think you want to hear. then when in office try to do just enough so they'll get re elected.

There's a difference between knowing lies and merely failing to do something. Trump's promise to appoint a special prosecutor was a glaring lie because, given how quickly he walked that back, he clearly had no intention of fulfilling it. A lot of his other promises he's tried to carry out so far. That's different than, say, putting together a health care plan where you *know* that people are going to lose their doctors then assuring people that it won't happen.

Yeah, he's free to, and we are free to criticize him. He also is an elected official; he's technically an employee of the state. Go into your boss' office tomorrow and call him a son of a bitch. See how much 'freedom of speech' protects you.

Freedom of speech, by the way, doesn't refer to an individuals right to say anything consequence free (for example, you can't yell 'FIRE!' in a crowded theater or tell a cop you are going to kill him), it refers to the freedom of people to publish their opinions and ideas without the government censoring them.

Why not?

Because the first amendment guarantees them freedom from government censorship. The president is a part of the government, ergo the president applying any sort of pressure to prevent them from saying what they're saying is governmental censorship.

The president shouldn't be calling people SOBs (and to be fired) for exercising their first amendment rights.

Why not?

Because the first amendment guarantees them freedom from government censorship. The president is a part of the government, ergo the president applying any sort of pressure to prevent them from saying what they're saying is governmental censorship.

Except that's never what it meant and that clearly doesn't fit any criterion for censorship.

Also it's arguable to what extent the founding fathers even believed in the First Amendment, because they used laws like the Alien and Sedition Acts to arrest journalists who were critical of the administration.

Glad we have such a professional president.

This is not new behaviour.
I'm actually a little more annoyed that he effectively called some woman he doesn't even know a bitch and people aren't a lot more outraged about it.

These ungrateful dudes make millions of dollars playing a game for a living. They need to show respect to their country for giving them that chance.

They'd be disrespectful if they burnt or spit on the flag (which the courts have, on occasion, ruled is protected speech even if it offends and/or angers people). When I served in the AF in the 1980s, we were told that the flag's a piece of cloth; not an idol to be worshipped. Besides I believe that Trump is only doing this because he couldn't buy an NFL franchise decades earlier and figures that it's time to pay the NFL back for their refusal to sell a franchise to him.

To be fair Obama called Kayne West a jackass.

That was off the record and just happened to be recorded. Trump has said hundreds of unprofessional and inflammatory things in an official capacity. He has no idea how to act like an adult

Honestly I always felt like that conversation was recorded and released on purpose as a PR bump since pretty much everyone hated Kanye in that scenario

Leave it to some guys who have taken way too many hits to the head to think this is the way to protest inequality. Why don't i get my political insight from some professional boxers while I'm at it lol

Yeah when push comes to shove he'll go ahead and read a script someone else wrote for him. He actually went ahead and did a 180 on that practically the next day though. So much for that speech.
