Was he secretly recording people without permission and uploading it to the internet? That's the only place I could see criminal charges coming from.

Explaining someone's childhood is making excuses for them? That's what all sorts of professionals and sociologists do. One of the beltway sniper's backstory was used to give him a lesser sentence and people explain how disenfranchised minorities grow up in a poor and destitute environment to justify the crimes they commit.
But, hey, I guess you now know first hand how hard it is to do that to someone you personally know.
Also, Australia prison isn't anything like US prisons so you can forget about your fantasies about what might happen to him in there
