I'm a cashier at wally world

Someone, unbeknownst to me, came in with fake 100's and loaded a card with them. They were a little weird looking but I didn't think anything of it at the time

The next day I basically got yelled at and threatened with a firing if I do it again

My store doesn't have counterfeit markers, but with how much money I handle, I can identify counterfeit money quickly and easily. A lot of times the serial number will be the same if paying with multiple $100 bills. Sometimes the paper it is on doesn't feel right. There are also times when you can tell it wasn't cut straight.

So they didn't train you on how to check the money before this happened, and all they did was yell at you and threaten to fire you if it happened again (again without telling you how to check the money)? Yeah they can get mad all they want, but it's kind of on them for not training you on this (I suspect that's why they didn't fire you this time, even though it sounds like you're a newer employee).

Like someone else said there are special markers you can use which will color the bill a certain color if it's real, and another color if it's fake. Assuming your store doesn't have those, there is another method to use (as somebody else also pointed out). If you hold the bill up to a light you should see a hidden strip and you should also see a hidden second face image of the bill on the right side of the bill. So for example if you've got a hundred dollar bill you should see another image of Ben Franklin on the right side of the bill when held up to the light. This works with $20's, $50's and $100's.

Also, the counterfeit markers are not as good as they once were. You can also see bills that are really a five or a one and someone printed a $20 or $100 on them. This is noticeable if you hold the bill up to the light.

I would expect them to as well, and if this was a large enough loss they may start doing so. But there are numerous other ways to detect counterfeits so if the store doesn't do it, given the already large mistake I would do it myself.

Yeah, especially with that amount of money. I could understand missing a 20 or something by mistake, but multiple hundreds? Should have checked. It's a lesson learned though.

@Harpie

There are three things to check for in every bill thats 20 or higher. (Some also check 10s and 5s but I ain't got time for that) You can see the first two by holding them up to the light.

1. The watermark. On the right side of the bill, there will be a watermark inside the bill of a face. (On some older 5's it's just a big 5)

2. The security bar. A thin, vertical strip going from top to bottom. It's location depends on the denomination and the year, but as long as it's there you should be safe. Hard to miss.

3. The "ridges" around the collar. On the central portrait, feel around the neck, collar, and shoulders for ridged, textured paper. These "ridges", from what I've been told by my supervisors before, are the most difficult part for counterfeiters

As long as a bill has all three, you should be fine. I've yet to be led astray with this list. Though if you have a marker, you should use that, too.

If so I find that hard to fathom getting duped. The older ones I could see if you don't know what to look for.

Still, buying a gift card for more than $100 seems like an immediate red flag to me to be extra cautious.
