I'm in Fort Lauderdale. The last Cat 5 hurricane I remember getting was Wilma, and that caused me to miss about 1.5-2 weeks of school. My mom and I have a flight booked to Jamaica, so we'll see how it goes.

Isn't that approaching the storm? Are the airports even open?

airports are definitely still open i think tommrow is the last day that south floridas airports are open

I'm worried almost to literal sickness. My parents just bought a nice bayside home in SW Florida a little over a year ago, and I housesit it for them until they're ready to make the full move. And considering things that have happened in the last five years or so, it would absolutely crush them to lose it now. I've been glued to every forecast and update since Monday, and when the models turned less optimistic for SW FL this morning over yesterday's more optimistic ones, I wrapped up my preparation and planning as best I could and got out this afternoon to my relative's house N-NW of Tampa - not an ideal spot obviously, but they're at least 40 miles inland. At least I had the good fortune to (under my dad's advice) slowly stock up on hurricane supplies since the beginning of summer. I'm stressed as hell, but I would likely be literally shitting blood right now if I had been caught off-guard on that front.

It's the first time in my life I've had to come to grips with the very real possibility of losing not only my house and my car (I had to leave it behind in favor of the sturdier and more valuable vehicle my parents left down there), but also possessions I've had since childhood. I wouldn't call myself materialistic, but I am sentimental almost to a fault. I fit every irreplaceable and semi-irreplaceable thing I could in my car and tried to grab as much of my parent's possessions as I could. Unfortunately most of what they shipped down is still in piles and piles of boxes, and I didn't have the time to go through them all. I did my best guess at remembering where the family photos were, and grabbed four boxes full of those (as well as a pair of marble sculptures that are my dad's most precious heirlooms). But I did have to leave behind a mountain of sketchbooks and drawings that spanned almost thirty years of my life, which are now sitting in a duct-taped plastic container. And while I did pre-pack my Super Nintendo + games and several other systems earlier in the week in case I was leaving, I couldn't justify taking everything - the NES, Gamecube and Wii all got left behind (hey, it's gamefaqs, had to tie in gaming somehow, at least for a dose of levity).

I do feel better now that I'm past the point of deciding whether to stay or go - the house is secured to the best of my abilities, and while I'm certainly not out of the storm's path right now, I am at least in a safer place than I was, and with family instead of being on my own. But I haven't been this emotionally frayed in a long time. Either I cry tears of joy if the forecast tracks the monster more east, or tears of sorrow if it tracks it more west. I can keep telling myself that I'll feel better once I know for sure where exactly it's going, and if it tracks along the east coast, that'll be true. But if it makes that delayed turn and tracks more westerly, that'll end up being a bald-faced lie; I certainly felt a lot better on Monday morning, when I was just concerned with yardwork and delicious leftover Labor Day food and didn't yet know this monster existed. These past three days have been among the longest days of my life in terms of stress and the shortest days of my life in terms of having enough time to do what I needed to do. And the next three days are going to be even longer, because now I'm just sitting around trying to take my mind off of things. I just keep praying so hard to God that my worries won't extend beyond the next three days.

I'm worried how long it will take for everything to get back to normal, but we have insurance, supplies, and a hurricane-proofed home so I don't see any point in panicking or worrying anymore since there's nothing else I can do about it. Just waiting to ride it out.

So if I'm reading this correctly, it should be a cat 2 or 3 by the time it hits Orlando, right

yeah around a cat 3. The slower it moves during that phase the worst it is for us tho.

Tampa is supposedly in the path for the eye to come through.
But, from the scans and reports I've seen; it's going to be a low cat-3/high cat-2 when it hits here.

Bunkering down and holding on for more memez though.

Hurricane's currently passing under us ans heasing for the Gulf like the earlier Weather Institute projection suspected before they changed their mind.

So unless it changes courses, we're going to be fine.

Uh, sucks for wherever it's landing though since that just means it's going to get stronger again.

Well, it's a four right now, I think, but if it builds up on the Gulf and swivels back or crashes into Texas or something, that would suck. It's still pretty strong, but it obviously wasn't going to be able to still be a five if it came at Florida in the way the projections a day or two ago said it would since it would have lost a lot of steam.

Ive read that once it leaves Cuba it will gain strength from the gulfs warm waters and again become a cat 5 again.

So it looks to me Irma weakened some overnight, but is going to move away from land interaction today. Irmas structure, the warm waters she will be in, and the generally favorable environment will mean we should watch the next several hours very closely. Many models have Irma strengthening very fast upon leaving the Cuban coastline.
