Seems an idiotic thing to do in either scenario to me.

Only if I absolutely had to and there were no other options.

I attempted to as my bus overshot the airsoft site I was going to, but I guess a guy in military get up and a load of nylon bags in the woods looks shady as shit.

No and no.

Though that said, when I went to Iceland, the amount of tourists I saw hitchhiking was mind-boggling. There were so many of them.

I was headed upstate to visit friends in college when I picked up my first and last hitchhiker. He was stranded on the road with a broke down car.

There was nothing really remarkable about him. He just said he had someone to meet a few towns over and he had this little black bag that he held on his lap. I tried small talk but only got short answers. At one point I asked what was in the bag and he said "None of your fucking business".

So of course this made me on edge and paranoid. But after a little while I just asked in a joking tone about what was in the bag. And once again, dead serious, the guy says "None of your fucking business".

Now I'm just mad. He's clutching the bag tighter and just staring off. I told him if he doesn't tell me what's in the bag I'm kicking him out of the car. He says "it's none of your fucking business, just drive."

I slammed on the breaks real quick and all at once lean over and open the door and start pushing him out. His ass hit the grass and I was already hitting the gas to get out of there.

A few moments later I look down on the floor and there sits the black bag.

I was in Nashville visiting someone at a hospital and this guy outside asked if I would give him a ride to his house to grab his stuff and bring him back to the hospital so he could meet his mom (she worked there) well it was one of those "1 mile down the road" stories that ended up being way out of the way
we get back to the hospital and he says wait here and I'm gonna go get gas money for you from my mom. I waited over 30 mins and finally had to be somewhere and drove away. I've always kinda felt bad because he left his bag in my car so I took it :/

I hitchhiked a few times on my way home from high school. I don't know why we did it or why people picked me and my buddy up. But we were both fairly large football players so I figured anyone trying to rape us would have a pretty hard (heh) time.

One time in middle school my same friend, his brother, and myself were walking to school in a blizzard. We had missed the bus so we had to trudge through the weather to get there. As we were walking down the road, a woman pulled over and offered the three of us a ride to school. It probably wasn't smart, but we lived in a nice area and she seemed nice so we accepted.

She introduced herself as 'Gay'. Like, her name was Gay. This was not a good name for three 13/14ish year olds around the year 2000. The three of us were desperately trying to stop ourselves from laughing.

When she dropped us off we thanked her and ran into the school and literally dropped on the ground laughing. It was at that point where it's less that it's funny but more that you're trying to laugh and we couldn't take it. Obviously we were not mature.

I've picked up exactly one person myself fairly recently. The same friend from the above and I were out at my university playing pool or something. We had walked out when a woman approached us and asked for directions. She was new to the area and had gotten on the wrong bus apparently. She seemed pretty frantic/desperate in her being lost. She asked us where the nearest Chevron because she was staying near a Chevron. The only one I could think of was something like three or four miles away up a hill. So we pointed her in that direction and walked back to my car.

We saw her walking in the direction we had pointed her, but then it occurred to me there was a closer Chevron about a mile away in the opposite direction which seemed to match her the description of the area around her home. So I said, "We gotta pick this woman up dude, we can't just leave her going in the wrong direction."

I drive up, explain that there was another Chevron I hadn't thought of and offered to give her a ride to the one I was thinking of and that we would take her to the other one if we were wrong. Sure enough, we take her there and she was practically in tears thanking us for helping her get home.

Not quite the standard hitchhiker story I suppose.

Would you ever hitchhike?

If I am stranded some place I am not ruling it out, but trying to go cross country with only a bag and a thumb? No. I know the odds of being picked up and I would rather not wait 3 days to go 50 miles only to do it all over again.

Would you ever pick up a hitchhiker?

If I am driving I have some place to go and probably no time to stop. That said I like helping people so I do have time I would consider it.

:(

To properly answer the question, I probably wouldn't hitchhike again. I don't think I would pick anyone up unless it's a girl who doesn't look like an ax-crazy maniac. Even then I very likely wouldn't bother giving her a lift. Perhaps if I really wanted someone to talk to.
