Thinking Japanese

I have the know how to do a lot of stuff myself, and I am a Toyota technician, meaning it'll be easier to get parts for the Toyota vehicles. Leaning the most toward a CRX

Most 80s hatchbacks looked like that.

I suppose it depends on what you want to do.

I would go Samurai if I wanted to build a crawler. Otherwise I would go with a land cruiser. I love those things. Lift it, put some beefy tires on the bitch, and turn that thing into a real pussy grabber.

I have a 97 4Runner right now, all stock. Here in Utah 4wd vehicles fetch a lot of money. The Land Cruiser is tempting since the older gens have a solid front axle, but Samurais cost a fraction of the price.

Hmmm, maybe an LS swap?

There is an MR2 (2nd gen) and a CRY (turbo) I'm gonna go look at today. We'll see which is in better condition.

Samurais have a really bad habit of tipping over while turning so keep that in mind

Nobody does that without it being a dedicated drag racer.

Really not a good idea when it's 46:54 f/r with a light 4 cylinder in back, just rebuild the engine and make sure it's in good shape for a bigger snail. Worst case you can swap in a celica engine if its an NA in poor condition.

I'd look at turning it in to a 1/4 mile car.

Personally I would do a gen 1 MR2. More classic, better balanced, and IMO better looking than the gen 2 car.

Point is it can take punishment so it's a solid base.

LS Swaps in anything like that is a difficult job if it's even possible, since I know the MR2's weren't exactly known for their big engine bays.

If you want an LS powered drag racer just get a cheap 98-02 Trans Am/Camaro. Swaps are cool but only if you are building some kind of passion related project race car.

Yeah, well the thing with Samurais, is they have 66 up NEW! Haha so a crate motor would be the first step in making it actually move.

Yeah, not really gonna make a drag car. Mostly just a tuned up fun car. My girlfriend just got a Lexus is300 and its pretty fuckin fast.

Oh yeah, the Samurai would be a cool project if you did an all out rock crawler job. I have seen some people do some impressive work with those things, always so extensively modified there is barely anything original left on the cars, but pretty cool. You definitely want a good roll cage on those.

If you just want a tuned up sports car getting a MR2 and doing some basic tuning should be enough. They are very light minimalist sports cars so you really don't need a lot of power to go fast in them.
