Three days after launching short-range missiles on Saturday, North Korea launched a new ballistic missile on the early morning of August 29, with the missile flying right over Japan’s northern island and landing in the Pacific Ocean.

As Japan and the United States reacted strongly toward North Korea’s provocation and vowed to increase pressure, China has refused to condemn North Korea publicly. Instead, China keeps calling on all parties to exercise restraint and remain cool-headed.

On August 29, questions about North Korea’s latest missile launch dominated the regular press conference of the Chinese foreign ministry. Yet the Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying refused to put out any harsh word on North Korea.

When asked if North Korea deserves special condemnation for launching missile flew over populated areas of Japan, Hua said:

The Security Council resolutions have explicit stipulations concerning the DPRK’s launch activities using ballistic missile technology, and the Chinese side is opposed to the DPRK’s launching activities in violation of the resolutions.

Then, she used hundreds of words to explain why the Korean Peninsula nuclear crisis is a complicated issue and implied that sanctions toward North Korea are useless:

The Security Council has passed several resolutions, and sanctions never stop, but do they really have any actual effects? Everyone notices that sanctions and missile launches are happening side by side…The current development of the situation has just proved once again the fact that sanction and military pressure alone will never be the final way out.

Rather than criticizing North Korea, Hua suggested that other parties–the United States, South Korea and Japan–had prompted “the vicious cycle of endless nuclear tests, missile launches and military drills.” So, she demanded them to reflect their own responsibilities:

To those who simply cannot stop talking about sanctions, I would like to ask them whether they have been comprehensively and earnestly implementing the Security Council resolutions in a balanced way? Or rather did they put undue amount of emphasis on sanctions while making no efforts to create necessary conditions and environment for the resumption of the Six-Party Talks?

Once again, Hua put forward China’s “suspension-for-suspension” proposal and called on all parties to “exercise restraint and remain cool-headed about the current situation.”

“Suspension for suspension,” or “dual suspension” was a proposal made by Beijing in March where Pyongyang would declare a moratorium on both nuclear and missile tests in exchange for the United States and South Korea halting large-scale joint military exercises. The proposal is welcomed by North Korea, but has been unsurprisingly rejected by the United States and South Korea.

Yes, because as stupid as they are, China appreciates North Korea as a buffer zone. I can't imagine a world where they would actually lift a finger to help the idiots once they throw themselves into the shit, though.

China, as a leader in industry, SHOULD condemn the missile.... because it fell apart.

It's an embarrassment to technology everywhere.

Of course they wouldn't, a non-answer is the only real answer they can give.

that's because it's fucking stupid as shit, and NK would just ignore it like they ignore everything or use it as a platform to invade SK.

the actual, 100% reason why NK is so cocky and just does whatever is because no one actually does anything to them. why would they stop if there's no actual reason for them to stop? no one is getting in their business about anything.

everyone can say "oh north korea needs to be taken care of", but that's nothing but talk. pure conjecture. until someone actually does something, they aren't going to change.

you can mobilize all these forces all you want, but their only purpose is to make it look like something might happen, and that may have stopped NK the first time or second time they did that, but then NK noticed that...they aren't actually doing anything in response to them.

By the same token, the odds that North Korea will actually do something are similarly remote. They know they can't win a direct war with the US and while Kim is a maniac, he's not stupid - one missile launched would end his regime. This is simple calculus on his part to solidify his dynasty and deter any potential military action by showing that he could slaughter millions on his way out.

This is true, but I'm worried in 20 years they might have many accurate intercontinental ballistic nuclear missiles and at that point it won't matter if they can't beat the US in a conventional war.

To me that looked like China was heavily implying Japan and the US need to invade NK.

At which point shouldn't our own technological advancement possibly make nukes from less developed counties seem nothing more than just spitwads?

And then there's this. With so much economical ties between various countries, I doubt anyone with a sane mind wants an actual open war between two first world countries.

North Korea isn't first world and as you said, China will not be first to shoot at any first world country.

If push comes to shove would we take a swing at North Korea despite what China stated? Or do you think we would call their bluff on supporting North Korea if we attack first?

Hell, I have coworkers saying we should just go in and take out North Korea. Even if China is bluffing, who is going to deal with the aftermath of assisting North Korea's citizens and whatever damages South Korea incurs?
