Is Crystal Hot?

Crystal Lowery, an american mother who lives in England with her husband have decided that they are NOT teaching their 5 y/o son to READ and has DEFENDED it!

She has started a heated debate on this after she said she is not teaching their 5 y/o son John, and 4 y/o daughter, Jenna to read and have decided to teach them more "important" things that's left him too busy to pick up a book.

She said "I'm not teaching my 5 y/o how to read. Don't get me wrong, we read books all the time to him. We've imagined ourselves in Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory and we're 170 pages into Harry Potter's Chamber of Secrets. We're teaching him to enjoy stories, to get lost in characters. But we're not teaching him now to read. Not just yet. He's too busy learning other things"

They said they'd rather he spend his time doing other things and more important skills such "learning how to be a good sport" by waiting his turn and not gloating when he his a board game against his sister.

Crystal says he's learning how to build by playing with blocks and lego as he examines the physical integrity of the various structures he's made.

He's also learning how to exercise by looking after his dog and how to put away toys. He's learning ecosystems such as bugs, flowers and thunderstorms. He's also learning the key to happiness is to focus his blessings rather than complaining about what he doesn't have. He's also learning how to apologize and overcome hurt feelings and empathize with other kids.

She said he won't enter kindergarten with "advanced reading skills" but he'll know so much more such as making friends and following instructions...

But her post has mixed reactions as some have applauded her while many say it's entirely possible to teach all those things while also teaching him to read.

People believe she's holding her son back by not realizing his potential as reading is a basic life skills.

But Crystal has decided to favour a more European style approach to teaching rather than just phonics.

Is Crystal Hot? let's see what people think

is rating hotness just a way to force us to view the image links or something? that would also explain why you refuse to use imgur. although, you'd probably have a link to the article if you were intentionally trying to create traffic to dailymail.

Translated: We want our kids to be dependant on us for as long as possible.
I mean if the kids could read they could more self-sufficient by reading and learning more things. I'd say reading is a very important part of life. Still I suppose they will learn reading at school anyway.

2nd option for me. I think she's teaching him all good things, but reading should be included in that.

Her main argument against it is that it would mean he'd be sitting at a desk all day. That's just wrong.

well, it's like the most important thing in terms of learning from a young age. some kids don't get taught and then end up not knowing how right away and it just slows everything down. or worse end up in grade 3-4 or higher without knowing.

think of it like an RTS or something. in an education strategy game, learning to read would be like the first thing to get taken care of as soon as you possibly could, because everything else stems from that one thing.

If the kid has some sort of problem that is slowing development then that's all the more reason to go harder earlier, not to take a moment to work on his feels.
Being a poor student later in life is only going to make being socially and/or intellectually stunted even worse. She needs to take the long view.

preschool is overrated. any advantages are soon diminished before 3rd grade.

why do toddlers need to read before kindergarten? you know, like rest of normal kids who do just fine learning the ABCs in kindergarten. school teaches the technical skills, and that's what he'll master there.

OTOH, she's teaching her kids the important lessons and behavior traits that can't and won't be taught at institutions, that only personal attention from a parent can provide. and from this, she shows commitments to profound care and attention for her kids for the long-term.

well i'm glad I learned to read before I started school. made things easier, and I got to enjoy more things before entering school, as said I was able to read instruction booklets for the few video games I had to play. read children's books and so on.

children learn faster than adults, so as soon as they can learn thats the best time to start.

i'm not going to tell anyone how to raise their kids though, its just my opinion so please no one be a ass about it

I literally had a school to try and talk me into dropping out, and my grades where mostly a's and b's with a sprinkling of c's. school had a horrendous drop out and kick out rate. later I learn they where ranked number 3 in the state educationally (and if you lived there you knew that was bs based on locals), the teachers got raises the higher test scores where, and finally that the drop out rate/kick out rate didn't effect either of those. so basically they where trying to get rid of what they felt was holding them back

Why is this news? I'm sure a lot of parents rely on schools to teach and parent their kids. These two aren't any different than any number of trash parents who shouldn't be raising kids so they're expecting the schools to do their job. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't interested in knowing anything more than how to feel out government forms to game the system. The only plus is that these people are England's problem right now. It's a shame that we can't push all of these idiots on England, Canada, and every other country stupid enough to take them.

This, tbh. The parents whose kids get ahead both in life and in the system are ones with parental involvement. A lack of parental involvement -- besides being borderline negligent -- usually sets children up for failure in the long term. While formal education has its place, parents should be teaching their kids as well.

While preschool and kindergarten are overrated, it's ONLY because the amount of learning can be handled at home. It's important that children learn during the early stages so they can advance at the later stages. As for the lessons she's teaching her kids, she's teaching them to worship idiocy and avoid actual learning. Reading and writing are the cornerstones of society, at least one par with spoken language. And it takes very little time to get children started on reading which can be woven in with those other activities.

The only thing unions care about is teacher compensation. Teachers unions work to the benefit of teachers at the detriment of students and the general public, which is why I'd love to see them banned.

More importantly, if you're relying entirely on the schools to raise your kids, you're a failure as a parent who shouldn't have kids in the first place.
