They got 23% nationally in the 2014 election but their share of the votes in Stockholm was 33%. Now they poll 15-16% nationally and 19% in Stockholm.

This is like the Republicans crashing in Texas or something to make a USA comparison.

If that happened, Republicans would never win a national election again.

Curious: in the US and UK, urban areas tend to lean more to the liberal/left side of the spectrum. Why is that not the case in Sweden? Is it something to do with farmers being the traditional base for social-democratic/labor politics?

The Conservatives got 30% nationally in the 2010 election so unless they turn the ship around they won't win a national election again anytime soon either. I don't want them in power but their complete failure in everything right now has made the Far Right grow immensely.

Yeah farmers and workers in smaller cities and in factories outside the cities have traditionally made up the Socialdemocratic base. The city centers in Sweden are inhabited by the wealthy while the poor live in the outskirts and the rich tend to profit by having the Conservatives in power.

The Socialdemocrats are also very popular in the northern parts of the country where there are a lot of workers in the lumber industry and iron ore mines.

I assume that there being more than two parties changes the character of the rural v urban debate

I imagine many rural areas are also fueling the rise of the far right?

idk though, their support seems to be concentrated near the danish border? I dont know enough about sweden to understand

You are right about all three things. We have 8 parties in our Parliament so it does indeed change the rural vs urban debate.

And yes, rural voters are fueling the far right. Right-leaning middle class voters, especially in small and medium sized cities, are also doing so.

The traditional strongholds of the Far Right however are located in our southernmost province which border to Denmark. It is the most immigrant/refugee rich province as well.
