I'm sort of with Trump on this in a way. Specifically I don't see a need to take them down. However I don't care if they are if that's how the people that live there feel.

Here's my stance...

Let the actual city the statues are in decide what to do. Everyone else stfu.

On the subject of Trump and Civil War history, some might recall this story from the campaign
https://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/11/25/us/politics/in-renovation-of-golf-club-donald-trump-also-dressed-up-history.html
Between the 14th hole and the 15th tee of one of the club’s two courses, Mr. Trump installed a flagpole on a stone pedestal overlooking the Potomac, to which he affixed a plaque purportedly designating “The River of Blood.”

“Many great American soldiers, both of the North and South, died at this spot,” the inscription reads. “The casualties were so great that the water would turn red and thus became known as ‘The River of Blood.’ ”

The inscription, beneath his family crest and above Mr. Trump’s full name, concludes: “It is my great honor to have preserved this important section of the Potomac River!”

Like many of Mr. Trump’s claims, the inscription was evidently not fact-checked.

“No. Uh-uh. No way. Nothing like that ever happened there,” said Richard Gillespie, the executive director of the Mosby Heritage Area Association, a historical preservation and education group devoted to an 1,800-square-mile section of the Northern Virginia Piedmont, including the Lowes Island site.

“The only thing that was remotely close to that,” Mr. Gillespie said, was 11 miles up the river at the Battle of Ball’s Bluff in 1861, a rout of Union forces in which several hundred were killed. “The River of Blood?” he added. “Nope, not there.”

Mr. Gillespie’s contradiction of the plaque’s account was seconded by Alana Blumenthal, the curator of the Loudoun Museum in nearby Leesburg. (A third local expert, who said he had written to Mr. Trump’s company about the inscription’s falsehoods and offered to provide historically valid replacement text, insisted on anonymity because he did not want to cross the Trump Organization by disclosing a private exchange.)

i think a lot of people in the south dont see the statue as a symbol of racism, its more about their heritage of having a separate history/culture from people in the north, honoring their fallen people in the civil war, etc.

obviously racism and slavery is a HUGE component in this but IMO a lot of these guys kind of just block out that part, now whether or not it's ingrained dog whistling or just willful ignorance is up for debate.

ive met a bunch of people from the south and they definitely do feel very disconnected from life up in the northeast in a lot of ways.

I'm boggled by the alt-left comment
like, that literally was created this weekend by Hannity

and it's annoying to hear him double-down on the whole "they're trying to destroy history" narrative. this comment from the reddit thread said it well, I think

The thing is, he doesnt give two shits about the statues. The only way he would even care is if it was a statue of himself.
What he is doing is to create a narrative for his base that the left is coming for the history and background of his supporters. That the left wants to "eradicate and destroy" the history of his supporters. That was his goal with the whole alt-left remark. He is not trying to bring the country together. He wants his base to be even more angry, because the more angry they are, the less they care about all the wrong he is doing. The more they show up to his campaign rallies and buy his god awful merchandise.
The trump supporters dont even care a lot about the statues, they just feel attacked because the president is gaslighting them into a frenzy that blinds them from reality.
In reality what is happening is, statues celebrating and whitewashing the history of the civil war era are taken down and MOVED TO MUSEUMS. Where people can still go and enjoy getting their dicks hard by reliving the glory of the south.

More evidence that this so-called president is already in lame duck status. He doesn't operate on the same wavelength as senate/house GOP members nor the people in general, so how then can he ever hope to move his agenda?

Analysts are saying he's on a one man island, and that's what it seems like.

No, they're being taken down by Democratic politicians to further their own political gain.

Here in NOLA when it was suggested to bring the issue to a city wide vote, it was shot down by Mitch Landrieu who knew if it was brought to a vote they wouldn't have went with his shitty publicity stunt

Probably. But I would assume if I was black I would be more concerned about modern racism (see: the people making a huge deal of this) rather than the statue specifically or its historical context.

If the southern states have monuments to the confederacy on public land and in their parks, and we're talking about going through the proper governmental channels to remove them, then the state or local government is saying they're ultimately ok with these statues.
