So now we have to discuss how Cersei is literally going to finish in third in what she thinks is a two sided war.

Yeah this episode definitely felt like the full transition from 'war of men' to 'war of death'

Cersei has like no place left now, so I'm sure she does something dumb soon.

sansa finally taking credit for retaking winterfell yeah yeah yeah
arya acting like a psycho no no no

all of the pairings in the episode were good. I liked the chemistry between the ranging party. jon and dany were good together this week.

I didn't feel a very strong emotional punch during any of the death scenes but I dunno, could just be me.

the battles were good. I liked the part where the Hound stepped up and saved Tormund. I actually felt like Tormund was going to die there so it was shot really effectively to try and sell that as a death scene. made the rescue feel more dramatic even though it was really just a small moment in a fairly large battle.

jon rescue scene was not as good. you basically know he's not going to die so any dramatic moments involving him feel cheap and underwhelming. would've been better to have him just get wounded and get away on the dragon normally. I guess they really wanted to give benjen an official death scene and not waste many scenes on his character.

Yeah I'm... not a fan of what the show is doing with Arya in Winterfell. Are they just building her up to not be happy she came home and leave again to go try to kill Cersei? I don't get it.

I somehow already forgot about deus ex benjen. That was somehow the most absurd part of the episode.

Also did anyone notice when Jon climbed out of the lake that the eyes on Longclaw opened right as breached?

Like... Can Bran warg into swords too?

How long were they sitting on that rock I wonder? 2, 3 days tops? It makes sense that sheer boredom is what screwed them, but the dragons still came soooo fast.

Or, considering Jon and Dany are on a boat(!), they get attacked by Euron next episode who actually has Dragonbinder and binds Drogon to his will and kills Dany? leaving all three sides with a dragon. The only thing that goes against this is that Drogon is the strongest of the three, so the only way Drogon could die is if Viserion and Rhaegal teamed up against it, which seems doubtful. But Rhaegal is totally Jon's dragon so.

The last season can't be people versus undead imo, simply because there are too many characters who don't play well in that setting. Tyrion, Varys, LF, Sansa, Cersei, Euron I guess are all characters who would fit weird in that game.

Which dragon was that that died?

Also I'm super glad that Dany (screw you I call you what I want) and Jon have such good chemistry together. Basically everyone knew they were going to be a thing once they met and it would have been way worse if they didn't sell it as well as they have been.

This episode was solely a fan service/spectacle episode that nearly everyone on this board is gonna shit on relentlessly

That being said, it was enjoyable. Some dumb stuff happened like all it taking was Hound throwing a fuckin rock to get the fight started and Jon for WHATEVER REASON running mad far away from the group at the end to keep fighting walkers. But I think we got what we wanted in the end, Dany fully on board with fighting the Night King and a WHITE WALKER DRAGON

I will say though, as someone who the show doesn't usually bother with its writing, this episode REALLY strained my suspension of disbelief.

Setting aside the blatant teleporting which has been going on for awhile now, there were a ton of issues with this episode. Killing the white walker caused all of the wights to die except ONE? A band of like 6 fighters were able to hold off an entire army for longer than a few minutes at most even accounting for the bottleneck in the terrain? Dany just happened to know exactly where Jon is and went straight there?

It was so bad that I couldn't ignore it this episode. It really harmed what was otherwise a good episode- all of the actual plot points were fine.

This one I am okay with since it seemed like the Night King knew what they were up to a set a trap.

And I think they established that if you kill the walker, all the wights it personally raised would drop too. So the NK sent a sacrificial walker with a bunch of his wights + one that wasn't his.

That was the biggest issue I had with it.

They could've just picked off all the wights down to one after killing the Walker.

I guess I was okay with mostly everything because it seemed to me like this was a long con that the Night King was pulling specifically for the purpose of getting himself a dragon. Like, why wait this long to launch his attack?

To be fair we were gonna have this problem no matter what, like there's no feasible way to have them go out into the North with the amount of people they did and have it make sense.

Note from Gendry could have specified a bit on where approximately they were + it's probably pretty easy to see a MASSIVE black grouping in an all white setting. The whole rescue in general is cliche and obvious as fuck but you could actually give a few reasons for that particular part.

Just watched.

Pretty awesome but the one walker surviving conveniently thing was bizarre to me (I'll go with it was a long con by the NK though) and - maybe I'm just missing this - but I don't get why the wights trapped them for 3 days. That's the thing that made the least sense to me and I was waiting for an explanation.

Everything else gave me the melodramatic action movie cliches I pretty much expected the whole time.

I also don't know exactly what the game is with Arya and Sansa. For all that seemed to happen, I'm not sure what actually happened. Sansa wanted Brienne away so she can...kill Arya? And what does Arya want? I have no idea. The motivations are muddy.

Apart from that, holy shit.
