Eclipses happen all the time. But how often does a total 100% eclipse slice through the middle of the country? (assuming you're in the US)

That's why this is a big deal. Partials (giggity) happen a lot. Total ones occur around the world periodically. But this one is a big deal because it's occurring in 100% totality through the middle of the country.

How can I safely look at the sun during the eclipse?

To prevent serious eye damage, you should only look directly at the sun through solar filters that are ISO 12312-2 compliant. Sunglasses are NOT safe for solar viewing. There have been reports of some fake and unsafe eclipse glasses being sold, so the American Astronomical Society has created a list of reputable vendors. You can use indirect methods of viewing the eclipse, such as a pinhole projector. Crescent patterns in the shadows of trees will also be apparent if there are no clouds. More information can be found at eclipse2017.nasa.gov/safety

The $1 pairs at Walmart actually meet the ISO 12312-2 Requirements.
