Sometimes I feel Chemical Plant Zone gets the love Casino Night should (as best S2 level), but I'll be damned if Act 2 isn't the most inventive thing Sonic Team has done in forever. It does enough new stuff without feeling weighed down by gimmicks. And seriously, that second Eggman boss fight is just. I didn't get it at first, but then it suddenly hit me what the fuck was going on. It couldn't have been placed anywhere else to make thematic sense.

The boss fights so far have been more than "Eggman in a pod to hit you." It's a welcome addition to change things up so drastically.

not sure if you guys want spoiled on what zones are in this game but I'll put it in spoilers just in case

Make sure you find the fire shield for Oil Ocean Zone. I've been setting oil on fire all over the place and it's amazing.

So you can unlock the peel-out from Sonic CD and the insta-shield thing from S3&K by clearing sphere levels and collecting the silver medals, but you can only use them on a no save file. That's dumb.

Peel Out is a completely worthless ability anyway and I always forgot that Instashield exists so who cares

Yeah, the peel-out is no big deal, but the insta-shield is sneaky useful if you get good with the timing of it.

This has been so inventive

The stuff they did in Chemical Plant 2 with the syringes etc was great. Same with almost the entirety of Studiopolis. Sonic exploding out of the TV is so great

Very clever so far. Setting the bridge on fire in Green Hill and the Chemical Plant zone boss...I've only done two and a half zones and this has been excellent

Studiopolis is better than Press Garden. The latter just makes me want to get to Hydrocity faster.

Loving it so far. Chemical Zone Robotnik encounter is top-tier hilarity. I had to stop and send a screenshot to a friend to make sure I wasn't dreaming that one.

That was literally the easiest boss in the game for me since I had the bubble shield. He went down in seconds.

Although I was actually surprised how hard the first Robotnik battle was. I didn't realize at first you could jump on the arms so that was a big game-changer when I figure that out.

Also, good tip, in Sonic/Tails mode you can make Tails pick up Sonic by pressing Up + Jump.

Pretty useful, although I decided to just go solo Sonic for my first playthrough for extra challenge and to have more fun finding new paths later. Also, Tails is kind of a derp.

All zones beaten as Sonic/Tails. Now to go back and get all the Chaos Emeralds to unlock the true last boss (presumably) before I do my Knuckles playthrough.

OMG! REMIXED OIL OCEAN ZONE! The theme hits me so hard. 2nd best stage behind Chemical Plant Zone's remix. Get those shields!

Like you expect a swing-ball boss in Green Hill Zone, but they messed with it a bit.

Also, man, I briefly lost my shit when I saw that what was essentially the Sonic 2 final boss was just dropped into the first zone. Like, damn.

Got a game over at Mirage Saloon 2.

Gonna be totally honest, I'm not really loving this game so far. Aside from the Hard-Boiled Heavies and Chemical Plant 2 boss, they've all been pretty shit. Of all the things to crib from Sonic CD, the terrible gimmick bosses are not what you want

I finished! Game was awesome, easily the best sonic game, and just a great game. They did so much right. Huge nonlinear, replayable levels, but you always know you're going rightward. And one of the first video games I've played where I liked the bosses as much as the levels. Crazy good music too.

And it furthers my belief that the quality of a sonic game has a very close negative correlation with how many bottomless pits are in the game. This has the fewest bottomless pits of any Sonic game I can think of, even fewer than Sonic CD perhaps. I don't think I even died once to a bottomless pit. (This Law of Sonic Game Quality even explains why the 3d games are so bad, they have a whole third dimension to fill with bottomless pit).

I listened to some of the OST and most of the new songs didn't impress me at all (disliked most of them)

Both Titanic Monarch Acts sound great though.

Also some really weird choices for stages used/remixed that I don't agree with.

Not sure if I should get, even with all of those negatives for me, I still sorta want it but I dunno

Game Grumps switched from their recent Unleashed playthrough yesterday to Mania today. Unsurprisingly, they feel very good about the decision to do so. Arin sucks at the bonus stages (what else is new) but they finally found a Sonic game playthrough since 3&K that didn't make them hate life.

I'm loving the new stages much, much more than the remixes.

I've never liked Hydrocity other than the music, and that remains true.

Beat the game.

Titanic Monarch was by far my fav stage, and the music in both acts is SUPER good.

Overall quite fun. Need more good music like Titanic Monarch tho
