It's more of a public message than anything, and besides, as much as western propaganda likes to paint them as idiots, you don't become a nuclear nation without knowing what you're doing. I'm sure they'd lose an all-out war, but they aren't dumb tacticians just because they answer trump's battle cries.

That question seems to be the general feelings of the news article I saw on it. NK tends to prefer trying to be unpredictable when it comes to actually attacking things in the past. And actually launching the attack he is posturing would only end poorly for him anyway.

The main uncertainty now is whether or not the current leader is actually capable of realizing his situation. I mean, we all make fun of how he has basically pretended to invent a bunch of stuff and propagandas about how he is some kind of god-king born on a volcano or something, but the sheer level of delusional propaganda going on could very well be masking some actual delusions of his own too.

If he actually is deluded and thinks himself something more than human somehow, or really does believe some of his own propaganda about other countries (i.e. the USA), then the risk of him doing something stupid and against his REAL interests is greater. In which case, he might go through with it, or attempt to use it as a "feint" to instead launch a missile at DC due to likely not really understanding how our government and/or defenses work (we might be able to shoot it down, and even if his missile is actually accurate enough to hit DC after getting past defenses, it won't destroy the government enough to prevent retaliation even if Trump refrains from launching our own missiles in response before it reaches DC).

Look, NK has got maybe two or three nukes at any given time. They can cause a great deal of damage in the region but are woefully unprepared for a sustained military conflict. It would be over faster than Panama.

Inb4 "that's what bush said about Iraq" Iraq was a relatively stable economomy with food and infastructure. The Iraqi military was foolishly disbanded and became the backbone of the insurgency.

North Korea doesn't have that. They have a grumpy little clown man and his family. The military is only really loyal to the extent that it's a stable income and the people at large are against the tiny despots rule. He might fire off a nuke or too and maybe hit something, but he cannot maintain control against the combined divine fuck storm the rest of the world would visit upon him.

I don't know about that. People were pretty devastated when Kim Jong Il died. The kind of grief we saw then certainly didn't seem like they were a disgruntled populace that were against his rule. It seemed more like they were so thoroughly brainwashed that he was the most important thing in their lives.

I beg to differ. When leadership roles are handed down to the next in line in the family it's definitely possible an idiot ends up in charge

Not really.

I mean he kinda has a point there. How is that really that much different? I'm not saying Obama should be compared to Jim jung Il but there definitely was a good bit of idolatry present for sure

Because their leader doesn't think like a sane person and therefore applying logic to him is itself illogical... Even rational countries have done this (albeit unintentionally): the U.K. media broadcasted their attack plans during the Falkland Islands conflict and the Argentinians laughed it off then the plan went forward and they were caught with their pants down. There's recent historical precedent as to why this topic is stupid.

On the political front, I agree, to some extent. You can bet your butt that there are intelligent advisers, security officials, generals, etc. advising dumb politicians on what to do, no matter what major country you're talking about.
