It becomes a lot less noble when you realize he's stealing it from people who have made it a feature of their ritual for generations and who will likely never see it again. And he's tossing it in a museum for the enrichment and amusement of white people, who will never understand the value it held for the people who lost it.

I mean. I guess he stole that idol but maybe he didn't know the jungle people are ooging to it but when he learned they were throwing spears at his balls and he wasn't inclined to give it back?

Don't think he he took anything else from anyone that wasn't already stolen.

The more impressive parts of these movies is the implied civilizations who could make photosenstive and pressure-sensitive traps out of vines and sticks, that still function after several hundred or thousand years.

If, it is in fact the natives resetting everything after some dumbass foreigner falls for a simple booby-trap, then yes, Indy's a bit of a dick.

I hated that part until I learned that it's against international law to privately own something recovered from a tomb.

And that's not to say that laws and morals are one and the same. There's plenty of room to argue that the people who place things in museums are no less grave robbers than a man like Panama Hat. But he is knowingly acquiring something which is agreed upon by various governments to belong in exhibition to the public as a preservation of history. It's not like he bought a movie prop and kept it in his basement.

Pretty much this. It's a fun story, but historically, this sort of imperialism actually happened a lot and groups are still fighting today to get their sacred objects back.

Seems like that would take a hell of a lot of planning, to build an altar for stones that someone else has.
Then again, it's all just worrying too damn much about a movie featuring automatically-resettable traps made of stone and vines, and a guy doing some sort of amateur heart surgery.

Well of course, first the altar, then comes the stones. And will all the child slaves, it's quite easy to find someone to manually reset all the traps...

This is why Lara Croft is a huge bitch (Pre-Re-reboot)

In both the original 6 games and the reboot trilogy, it's her parents who are wealthy. Then when she grows up she goes around the world stealing important cultural relics and then keeps them in her house, just for herself and her bulter to look at

But in the second movie she returns the pandora box to the africans. Actually she doesn't take any artifact for herself in the first movie either so...
