Like, I get not buckling up if you're going to really commit to it (I don't agree, but I get it I guess), but how do you forget? Isn't that just the first thing you do when you get in?

Also, pretty much every car yells at you if you aren't buckled and are the driver, some when being the passenger too.

The law serves multiple purposes. Firstly, being injured invites rescue and medical treatment which can endanger or inconvenience other individuals. Hospitals aren't allowed to say "This guy with three kids was stabbed and that single guy with no kids is only injured because he willfully wore no seatbelt", they're going to devote the resources to care first for whichever shows up at the hospital first.

Secondly, albeit more of a stretch, it ensures that, if you crash, and even if it's so bad you die instantly seat belt or no, you're not going to fly out of your car and cause additional damage to someone/something that otherwise wouldn't have been touched in the wreck.

And then I moved to Korea and it's not really a thing here so I kinda forget sometimes.

Their job has them on the go all day anyway. That's like saying the UPS guy is more at risk becasue he has 201 deliveries instead of 200

Who is to say which life is more important? You don't know. The dad could be a deadbeat and the guy with no kids could be the sole provider for his disabled parents. If you are in a bad wreck seatbelt or not your going to the hospital anyway.

I mean, technically, that is literally true? I was talking more about overcrowding the hospital with people who could have avoided injury by wearing seatbelts, which stretches staff thin and lowers the quality of everyone's care, but there is a marginal increase to the danger of the first responders each additional time they have to save someone.

There are literally a million little dangerous things that someone can do that can be harmful to themselves and to other people around them. Should all of the other things have laws and fines attached to them? Sure, why not. lets go baby, let's regulate.

This is an argument that will never be settled and we will never see eye to eye.

I don't understand how anyone in the habit of wearing a seatbelt could forget to put it on for long. It's like if you normally wear a hat and forget to put it on, after a minute or two you will notice you aren't wearing it.

Seatbelts feel like something when they are fastened and if you aren't wearing one you should feel odd.

This. I can honestly say I don't think I've forgotten to put on my seatbelt in the last 10+ years. Sometimes my routine gets messed up and I put it on after taking the car out of park. But it's always on by the time I start driving.

I'm pretty much in line with this thinking.

My best guess is it comes from a deeper issue where people can't be told what to do or how to live or whatever. Like they're expressing themselves or rebelling in some way.

Because there's absolutely zero logical reasoning which supports not wearing it.

I mean I can say for certain I've peed more times than I've put on a seat belt. And on occasion if something (read: my phone) happens to interfere with my routine, I catch myself about to leave the bathroom without flushing. The number of times I've caught this mistake at the last second, coupled with a general understanding of statistics/probability, leads me to assume that at least once (but totally more than that) I've left a bathroom without flushing.

The same is pretty applicable to putting on a seat belt.

However, the difference is that the feeling of not wearing a seat belt is a much more long-lived thing, as people have suggested. The duration of the average drive is much, much longer than the duration of the average trip to the restroom. So it's like, every second (or arbitrary unit of time) while driving you have a chance to realize your seat belt isn't on.

To go an entire drive without realizing it indicates either that you weren't taught to always wear a seat belt or that something is seriously, SERIOUSLY distracting you. Like life altering, life-or-death levels of distraction.
