Do you prefer playing 2D or 3D fighters?

I was curious, how many people like 2D fighters, & how many prefer 3D fighters? Please note, I am not trying say 1 is better then the other, both are great fun, this is simply an opinion based topic, not a 2D vs 3D topic.

I enjoy both types but I must say I seem to prefer 2D fighters like King of fighters, Smash bros, Jump ultimate stars & Bleach Dark Souls more then 3D fighters like Soul caliber, Tekken & such. What do you guys like?

Maybe I like 2D fighters more because I've being playing them longer? I also think I am much more skilled at playing 2D then 3D.

I've seen precisely two series do 3D fighting and make it fun: Soul Calibur and Power Stone.

I also really like Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, I guess that would be a 3D fighter, not a very traditional 1 though. If I listed all my favorite fighting games, I think atleast 60% would probably be 2D fighters.

I love how listing 3D fighters goes from Tekken (active franchise) to Soul Calibur (last entry in 2012) to "etc". I mean, that's right since they basically all went away after the early/middle era of polygonal graphics but it's just kinda funny.

And yeah, the results speak for themselves. 2D is more popular even if there are some legit 3D fighters that exist.

Yeah, the main problem is there arent very many 3D fighters out there, 2D is more popular and probably a tad easier to make

I honestly didn't expect the results to be so 1 sided, I figured it would be roughly the same. 2D is winning in an absolute landslide.

I have played both terrible and great 2D and 3D fighters. I have probably played more good 2D fighters, but I have also played more bad. Like above I think thats mostly due to there simply being more 2D out there. I don't really have preference.

So true. I think it's cuz the special moves feel special.

Can't speak on powerstone, but 3D Soul Calibur just works perfectly.

Everything else is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy more fun in 2D

Tekken and Soul Cal are the stand outs among what's generally a pretty bad genre.

with that being said, I'm pretty sure most Tekken people would agree that 3D>>>>2D

Tekken and SC are just much much better than other 3D fighters (Virtua fighter 5 I'm on the fence about, rival schools was awful and other 3D fighters I played same story)

I tend to like 3D fighters more, but I will admit that 2D fighters tend to be deeper and involve a lot more strategy. I just enjoy Tekken a lot more then Street Fighter.

I actually think Dead or Alive is pretty good as well. Think Virtua Fighter but a lot easier to pick up and get good at. Everybody seems to only pay attention to the boobs and forgets that it is actually a pretty solid game.

All the difficulty in Virtua Fighter seems to stem from the move set, not the actual fighting strategy.

I've actually had a basic concept for 3D-hybrid gameplay regarding Marvel games.

Basically, the left shoulder buttons would lock you down to a single plane and makes your character play like they would in a 2D fighter, giving them access to blocks, jumping, certain specials, and their meatier combos; whereas the normal 3D gameplay would give you access to sidestepping and "Tekken-lite" movesets with more tracking attacks and a smaller set of specials. Imagine using the trigger button to cancel inbetween combos and whatnot.

As much as I prefer 2D fighters, I sort of want Marvel to be 3D just to take advantage of the various stages; Atlantis, Wakanda, Midgard, K'un-Lun, Space, etc.

It'd also allow for some variation between two or more characters that have energy blasts as their power.

I really enjoy Dragon Ball Tenkaichi tag team on PSP, its 3D but much more fast paced then other 3D fighter I played.

I've never actually played Power stone, should I try & get the PSP collection/re-release?

I have so many great memories of playing 2D fighters on GBA like King of fighters, DBZ supersonic warriors & Street fighter. I've also spent countless hours playing Smash bros on N64.

I don't know about Tag Team, but Tenkaichi's more along the lines of an arena fighter than a true 3D fighting game.

If you enjoyed that, then I recommend the Naruto games. Those are pretty good.
