I share this small aneceote as a reminder that sometimes even the most inconsequential exchanges can require feats of incredible willpower. This had been a long day and I had lost the ability to laugh at awful jokes hours ago--And boy, this delivery and punchline would stress my capacity on a good day. Immediately I began mouthing the words, "Oh, I'd laugh if I thought you were funny". My facial muscles relaxed and contracted, and my eyes in horror began searching his face for his indignant response but all I had heard was silence.

Silence because my last resolve of will had stopped the words from coming out. In relief, my mouth instead turned into a crooked and fraudulent smile as he carried on to some other witticism, no doubt. I tuned him out for a minute and secretly celebrated this small, insignificant, meaningless victory over the dubious intents of impulse in this mundane society of facades.

Celebrate the small victories, my friends.

The One S is no slouch, but it’s using very similar technology to the original Xbox One that launched in 2013

I legitimately did try to smile at him. I just know what it looked like and what it looked like wasn't a smile.

I had a manager last year that had quite literally the worst fake laugh ever. Anytime she'd use it on someone I wanted to crawl away and hide under a table.
