Not gonna TL;DW this video. It discusses the progression of roguelikes, FPS games and "immersive sims" as a way to illustrate the way that new genres are formed and proliferate - and, occasionally, even stagnate due to the required trappings required to remain as a part of a genre.

If that sounds interesting to you, plot out fifteen minutes of free time and watch the video.

Yeah, and we should call it a "role playing game" or "rpg" for short. I think it could become a big thing.

Dark souls sucks so no

I used to think this too until I got about 13 hours into the game at which point it became one of my favorite games of all time.

I got past the part when the giant bird takes you somewhere. Was not enjoying the game tho so I stopped. I usually love difficult games too.

You're like 5% into the game. I didn't start enjoying it until a good amount after that, but once I started enjoying it, I enjoyed the fuck out of it.

It's fair to say if it takes that long it's not worth it, I'm just saying for me it did take that long and it was so worth it.

I'll be honest: I went to the video on youtube and downvoted it out of spite, because Gamefaqs is bad enough without people using it to cross-promote content on other sites. If you have a point, make it. If you want to discuss something, do so, but don't dump a video, refuse to tl;dr it, and then expect people to go check it out.

the problem ive found with every dark souls clone ive played is that none of them really seem to understand what the appeal of dark souls games are.

ive found as i played through the souls games that the focus is not on super hard difficulty or intense combat, but more on level design, atmosphere, enemy design, exploration, secrets, an obscure narrative, etc

when i played a game like nioh, for example, it had tight combat but it felt like they just threw in the rest of the dark souls elements without wondering WHY they should be in the game. the result is that, for example, you're going through these boring, generic stages looking to open up shortcuts for no reason other than because that's how you do it in dark souls as well.

when i first tried dark souls i hated it, until homegirl Leana told me to actually start looking at it as more of a puzzle game than an action RPG, where you are trying to navigate through an intentionally tricky level moreso than overcoming some kind of great odds. when i looked at it through this perspective, it really opened up the series to me. on the other hand, when you play a clone game, it seems like they just jotted down the main elevator pitch aspects of dark souls (high difficulty! rolling! punishing combat!) and throw that into their games, with little success IMO

Eh. After an hour of two and I am still not into it I usually call it quits. More of a Skyrim person lol. I got nothing against the series tho. I know people who love it.

Why would I care? It's not my video. I just thought people might like it. You talk a mean game about Gamefaqs being "bad enough", but you make the most self-centred, arrogant post about it because I didn't serve the video's entire premise to you by the spoonful and dislike it out of pure spite. Gamefaqs is "bad enough" because drips like you post here.

Dark/ Demon's Souls is an Action Role Playing Game that is very famous.
A Souls-like ARPG is already a genre.
What is the video trying to say? Didn't watch.

The tl;dr: Much like how "FPS" came about as a genre after years of calling things "doom clones", the "souls-like" genre needs a new and proper name not tied to the game that kicked the genre off.

FPS is a descriptive genre though. Doom was an FPS whether people called it that or not. I can't think of a name other than "souls-like."

Maybe... blocky-dodgey- difficulty-game.
Or and acronym that spells git gud.

people already compare dark souls to everything in completely pointless ways, it doesn't need a genre named after it to make this even easier

That sounds really fucking stupid

Dark Souls is just an action rpg

This is like saying we need a Pokemon-like genre because of all the shitty Pokemon clones they made

To me it'd be almost pointless

The atmosphere and enemy design in Dark Souls is incredible. Probably unmatched by any game. Its the sole reason I picked up the first one and most of the reason why I continued through it (and the 2nd)

Take that away (if you were to do different settings like space for example) and theres really not much there for me to like.

I didnt like the premise of the Dark Souls games at first but 2 and 3 were absolutely amazing. At surface the difficulty can be an attractor/detractor but once you get past that you see how deep the game actually is. Being able to test out all those weapons and builds and not to mention having the best variety of fashion of any rpg Ive played. And also the overall level and enemy designs and atmosphere and music. It just all comes together so damn well.

Dark Souls and Kingdom Hearts are both action RPGs.

Whether you think they are different enough for separate genres depends on your opinion I guess.

MH also came before even Demon Souls... One could argue an old PS1 game did that sort of gameplay way before Souls series and MH.

It's nothing new and not nearly different enough (nor better or even harder really, Souls games are fucking forgiving, cheesable, cheesy cakewalk compared to something like G-rank MH) to warrant it a genre.

Sadly it's popular enough that "Souls-like" is a thing, but that's more due to the gaming community being sheeps and utterly idiotic

if you are having trouble with a tough spot you can literally sprint to the bonfire and run past all the enemies

only really tough part are some of the bosses, and you can just summon a bunch of dweebs to come beat em for you
