The FCC wants to destroy net neutrality and give big cable companies control over what we see and do online. If they get their way, they’ll allow widespread throttling, blocking, censorship, and extra fees. On July 12th, the Internet will come together to stop them.

Why am I only hearing about this minutes before the 12th? I hope I've just been living under a rock and they didn't try planning this thing so suddenly.

I just heard about it as well, unfortunately.

Went to check out a thing on Reddit and a message from /u/spez. :D

WHAT IS NET NEUTRALITY?

Net neutrality is the basic principle that protects our free speech on the Internet. "Title II" of the Communications Act is what provides the legal foundation for net neutrality and prevents Internet Service Providers like Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T from slowing down and blocking websites, or charging apps and sites extra fees to reach an audience (which they then pass along to consumers.)

WHY IS NET NEUTRALITY IMPORTANT?

The Internet has thrived precisely because of net neutrality. It's what makes it so vibrant and innovative—a place for creativity, free expression, and exchange of ideas. Without net neutrality, the Internet will become more like Cable TV, where the content you see is what your provider puts in front of you.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN ON JULY 12TH?

Websites, Internet users, and online communities will come together to sound the alarm about the FCC’s attack on net neutrality. We'll provide tools for everyone to make it super easy for your followers / visitors to take action. From the SOPA blackout to the Internet Slowdown, we've shown time and time again that when the Internet comes together, we can stop censorship and corruption. Now, we have to do it again!

SITES: DISPLAY AN ALERT

On July 12, sites from across the web will display a prominent alert on their homepage that shows the world what the web will look like without net neutrality. Below are “spinning wheel of death”, “blocked”, and “upgrade” alert modals; plan to use the one that best fits your site to encourage users to send a letter to the FCC and Congress in support of net neutrality. To use these them, you just need to embed a bit of javascript in the header of your site. Click here to try them out, and then be sure to grab the code on GitHub. If you're a Cloudflare user, try out their BattleForTheNet app. And for Wordpress, use their plug-in here.

And don't worry, none of these will actually block, slow, or paywall your site. But, they will let your users submit a comment to the FCC and Congress without having to leave your platform. They will only show up once and users can click away.

I love that in the list of sites supporting it, there's Amazon, Netflix, then BitTorrent and a handful of porn sites XD

Hey now, they better respect Amazon. Their delivery drones know where those ISP presidents live. </joke>

That reminds me. Did that Amazon "Death Star of Business" thing ever progress past some patents?

But in all honesty, what would happen if Amazon said "you can't order from our site if you use x ISP because they were part of killing net neutrality."

Monied interests will pay for botnets to post copy-pasted anti-NN propaganda using dead people's names again and the FCC chair will just point to that and say "see the public hates NN!" and continue dismantling it. God I hope I'm wrong, but the tepid FCC response to that bullshit makes me think there's no hope. CAPTCHA'S HOW DO THEY WORK?!?!? Seriously either the people in charge of regulating the Internet have absolutely no idea how any of it works or they're colluding with the astroturfers. Neither is comforting.

Ah. The joke part was a "Amazon could deliver bombs/other dangerous things to them" sort of they-know-where-you-live.

If they actually did that no-joke, it would not go over well to say the least.

They named the bill to remove net neutrality the "Restoring Internet Freedom" Act.

Here's the thing: While I like net neutrality, all of those claims are completely speculative and overlook that many functions are already happening at the company (throttling) or government (censorship, control over what people see/do) levels.

For the most part, the bills proposed mostly seem to offer faster plans rather than being forced to treat all data equally. This means that Netflix could pay Comcast for a more reliable connection, not that consumers are just going to be given shitty connections (and, generally speaking, consumers ALREADY have shittier connections. We pay more for far worse service than other nations get)

Oh, just went onto NFI which also mentioned the thing with a link to this site:
https://netneutrality.internetassociation.org/action/

Which looks unbelievably goofy, stupid, etc, and an insult to anybody's intelligence, thus *almost* making me want to oppose the thing on principle. Granted, it's no surprise that Netflix would support neutrality because they're a primary beneficiary and would be forced to pay out to providers if a measure went through.
