does this thing really get that hot from normal use?

Only when you cover it with lingeree. IT even says in the manual that you are supposed to keep it's ports free of obstructions!!!

Mine gets pretty warm from extended Breath of the Wild use.

Not scalding hot, but just "oh, that's a little warm."

And this is all undocked. I've never once used the dock.

I have an OG PS4. I'll have to check again on a day when I play a while.

Even my Vita gets a bit hot at times though if played long enough.

I'm just basing it off of the few articles I've read, a the many forum posts asking if it was normal.

I've never played my ps4 enough to see, not that I'm feeling it up or anything anyways

It's small and does a lot for its size (that's what she said), but it's probably nothing to worry about. My PS4 gets pretty hot (is the revised original - TTK one).

That's pretty much been my experience, both docked and undocked. Certainly not really hot, but warm enough for me to notice it.
