When we're talking about things your car needs, oil and gasoline refer to two separate things. But when we're talking about the industry and the process of acquiring petroleum to be refined into gasoline, we often call it oil. And then there's the frequent shortening of "gasoline" into "gas", but "gas" adds to the confusion as it can also refer to a state of matter.

Home heating oil is off-road diesel. There's literally no difference.

Here, they refer to it as petrol.
