I don't really do Fitibit and stuff like that so I'm not contributing to whatever DSR had in mind.

Still not a bad idea to have this topic. I'm gonna try to eat a little less going forward. Need to get my motivation to unstoppable levels, but it never sticks.

I can't quantify roller derby stuff sooo I'm not doing the thing DSR is doing either.

I have eliminated soda from my diet so far. Trying to regulate what kind of food I'm eating. I ate half a box of dry cereal last night because of sugar cravings gone out of control so I'm not doing so hot right now.

I've got some plans to start up an exercise routine real soon. Nothing extremely major, but it should help instill the right mindset going forward. Also trying to be a bit more conscious of sugar intake. I've never been on board the soda guzzling diabetes train, but there are times I've had quite the sweet tooth, and I'd like to limit that as much as my clearly addicted body will let me.

Some fun videos I stumbled upon recently that helped spur on these desires. I haven't completely vetted everything mentioned in them, but at a glance they seem fairly legit.

the fitness subreddit and bodybuilding.com aren't bad resources. neither is the gamefaqs martial arts board, 212. (read the stickied topic; the rest of it is cancer.)

the essentials are: start with a full-body routine with a barbell. most important lifts are squats, deadlifts, bench presses, and some sort of pull. increase the weight periodically.

eat a lot of food to gain weight, the healthier the better. it can include protein shakes.

I've started gaining weight again (up to 165 lbs after years at 150 lbs), and I feel my home workouts aren't cutting it anymore. I'm planning to join a cheap gym for the first time since I stopped working as a trainer/instructor. The problem is nearly every place puts their prices behind an email wall. I'd rather not bother, so if anyone knows about these chains and their price ranges, please let me know. These are the places around my home.

Anytime Fitness
Snap Fitness
YMCA
Lifetime Fitness

I worked for the Y, so never had to pay the membership. I got Lifetime, but I think they weren't cheap. I'm mostly curious about the other two.

We have none of those on Puerto Rico, sorry.

Most we have are Planet Fitness and HCOA Fitness. And many local gyms, which I think charge like $15-$20 per month.

I'm actually not sure if I should straight up join a gym or start working out on my own.

currently going through "good calories bad calories" by Gary Taubes. I've been recommending a high fat 0 grain low carb diet in these topics for a long time, but I finally have a definitive book to point to when recommending it.

If you have even the smallest idea that fat causes clogged arteries (it doesn't) or that lots of carbs are necessary for your body (they're not.) or that the AHA is anything but a dogmatic and cult-like Ancel Keys worship organization I would recommend picking it up.

Before this all my information about nutrition was sorted into about a dozen different books that were hard to recommend because of their glaring flaws, but now I have a single tome that exhaustingly covers everything.

Saturday I did 40 minutes on the elliptical

5 lbs. Some mass gainers have 10 lb bags. I have seen GNC sell 20 lb buckets for $130.

I think you're going to find that one day you have this amazing day where you just keep going...and then you'll be back to comparatively shorter stints for a while. But you'll have that one day where you go 30+ minutes and you'll realize "y'know what? I can do this when I really want to."

My goal is to do like 20 minutes of cardio before or after (I'm not sure which is better, gotta do more research...) some beginner weight lifting eventually. Currently more focused on CICO and eating better as a habit - gonna try keto out since gluten based foods have been making me sick for the past few months (which is tragic because I fucking love bread and pasta and stuff).

It felt really good to workout at a gym again. I forgot about how much work it was. Leg presses killed my quads, mostly because squatting at home did jack all in comparison. Numbers weren't too fancy (I didn't lift anything harder than 65-130 lbs), but it was mostly a measure to see how my body held up after a few years away from a workout like that. Not bad actually. Absolutely free too, so no complaints from me.

Sheesh. I took what was a good day lifting and turned it to shit by drinking too much pop and protein shakes. 166 lbs...bleh. I bought one last pop as a symbol of how much I've been sucking lately. Starting tomorrow, I actually make the effort to stop screwing around. Needing water is one thing in summer, but not this badly. Maybe then I could work on my appetite. Even getting back to where I was in May (155-158 lbs) would be a decent start.

One way would stop dicking around the vending machine at my apartment. I swear I bought from it four times today. I don't have that kind of money to burn.

What, exactly, is your goal? To speed up your 5k? Or to run farther in 30? Or something else entirely?

Really generic advice is to have at least 3 major runs in the week, geared toward length, speed, and a strong in-between. And if you're serious about improvement, having light runs on at least two other days. Some people swear by tempo runs, or long runs, or speedwork specifically, but I'm neither a running coach nor know very much about you.

According to a recent issue of Runner's World, that claim is a myth. Granted, I don't know their sources, and they couldn't possibly be biased, but thought I'd throw that out there.

Anyway, I went to the gym yesterday and did legs. That included some squats and deadlifts, which I've always wondered if I need to work on my form with. Today my upper back hurts, so I guess that answers that question. It also makes me not want to go back today for upper body.

Don't want this to be a rest day, though, so I'll have to find something else to do. I could run, but I wasn't really motivated to run.

People disagree with me on this, but I do squats and deads on different days. Try it sometime it might be better for you. My routine is usually

Sunday - Legs
Monday - Chest/Bicep
Tuesday - Back/Tricep
Wednesday - Off
Thursday - Legs 2
Friday - Quick shoulder workout (usually I consider this a "half day")
Saturday - Off or makeup day

I try to do about 20 to 30 mins of swimming on Monday/Tuesday/Friday as well, but meh.
