Freedom Planet was a sick run that's impressive to watch even if you don't know the game. The commentary for it was extremely detailed and informative, giving a ton of helpful information, and also really hyped me up for the difficult tricks (the runner nailed pretty much all of them first try, with only the single hardest taking a few attempts). However, the commentary is pretty much non-stop, so if you don't want to listen to a guy talk the whole time, that could be a negative.

While they're at it they need to get a new announcer. The woman who usually does it seems nice, but something about her voice really grates my eardrums. It might just be the way it sounds over a mic.

speaking of extremely detailed commentary, the diablo2 run did it again with some of the most informative commentary I've seen. It's not a super fast paced game so the runner has the spare attention to commentate it himself, and all 3 runs he's done at various gdqs so far he didn't even have couch commentators and just did like 1.5 hours of constant commentary himself, describing strats, game mechanics, useful tips for running the game, etc etc

if you've played the game at all in the past and you just like learning about things, I definitely recommend checking it out. The run is long but it goes by fast

Yeah, I watched the VOD yesterday. It was one of the best at the show. Carl and Pooh are always super entertaining, and DoDe is one of the best Mario runners in creation. I'm kinda sad there was no Mario Maker block this year since its been the most entertaining block the last few years. That community really knows how to put on a good show

They do, last year they ran like a 90 rotated version. That sounds simple but it was pretty entertaining.

This one was rough because it was advertised as a race, then 2/3 guys died 13 minutes in, and then the last guy had to play it super safe since they couldn't not get to the animals part.

There was no true like Pepsi man style meme run, they tried to hype up I Am Bread but it even spike realized it wasn't as funny as he thought it'd be once it started going.

I honestly can't think of many things that'll beat Pepsiman run though. There just aren't that many meme but legit games made in general.

It'd be nice to get a VR speedrun though actually. And the camera of the player is just as big as the screen

Nothing can beat that Pepsiman run if they try to force it to happen again, it just kinda happened. It was at a highly viewed time of day, since it was like right before an OoT run. The commentator and couch were amazing, and the internet was quick to meme it. It just worked.

As for Super Metroid, this wasn't the first time multiple people died in the race. Sadly that's part of the danger in running it.

I haven't watched any of the VOD clips yet but the audio was out of sync (mainly the runners mouth didn't match up with what they were saying) basically the whole time I watched it live. But I blame that on the shitty connection at my parents house and the fact I was using the twitch app in an old Roku.

Say what you want but for a charity event that gets almost $2m dollars per year and pockets between 20 and 30% of it, i'm sure they can afford a better tech team... unless its "tradition" at this point to keep this sound team...

AGDQ VoD's also had audio issues, mono audio, desync, etc etc.

From what I've been able to tell, all of the money SDGQ and ADGQ raises goes to charity. Instead, Doctors Without Borders pays SDGQ a flat amount up front for everything they do. This is from an SDGQ organizer on reddit last year:

"GDQ LLC was paid $170,485 for SGDQ 2016 by Doctors Without Borders. This payment was prior to the event and was a fixed amount we arranged based on what both sides expected 2016 to do. This payment is a sum which we use to pay staff, pay the hotel, shuttle buses, buy equipment, cover business expenses, servers, insurance, internet at the event, moving and storage, World9's costs, etc. We use our other income for extras such as the arcade, pinball, extra hotel space, and to supplement the previous list of stuff.

All money from SGDQ 2016 is MSF's to do with as they please. If they are dissatisfied with our performance this event, they can simply not contract with us for next year. They will keep 100% and we will have to look elsewhere.

Our only other income is from attendance registration, Twitch Stream ads, and Twitch contract. Sub money we receive is donated. Twitch gives us 100% of July's sub money instead of the normal cut for us to donate to MSF.

Our sponsors are donating to MSF directly or offering their time/services at the event. We do not get a cut of any ads or those sponsors we played in our stream (to be clear: all ads that are not the Twitch partner ads you see on other channels).

In other words, the charity for the event pays them to run the event. They keep money collected from attendance, ads, and Twitch views. They give all of their sub money for the month to the charity.

Also, as charities go, Medicail Sans Frontiere/Doctors Without Borders is one of the best ones out there for making sure the money they get goes to good causes. 87% of money donated to MSF/DWB goes directly to helping people.

AGDQ's money for Prevent Cancer Foundation isn't quite a well spent. While it DOES all go to the charity, PCF focuses more on diagnosis and dealing with cancer than with research. As a result, the money they raise typically only helps Americans despite the fund raiser being an international event. Also, more of their money goes to administrative expenses than MSF/DWB, with only around 75% of the money PCF gets being spent to help people.

That's still pretty good tho. You have to expect that large organizations will have overhead expenses. The fact that DWB is able to put so much money to good use is a sign that they're a good charity rather than PCF being a bad one. Bad charities, like Goodwill, only use around 20% of the money they raise to help people with the rest being spent on "overhead".

Probably most or all of that is equipment costs, I would imagine the tech crew is probably all volunteer based on that budget.

EDIT: That's $170k gross, not profit for GDQ LLC. An event that big costs a lot of money to run. I doubt they make $30k profit off it.
