i dont mind that it's taking place in america because im not into anime and i found some of the japanese culture elements of death note to be kind of confusing (like i had to google what cram school was for example).

however there are a few things that im worried about:

- i dont get why L is showing his face in public, even if he is wearing a mask to cover it up. anime L would never do that, especially in the case of this movie since L is a black guy so he is even more easily identified than the japanese L

- I hope there is more focus on the cat and mouse game with L and Light and not on straight up action

- I hope they make the movie Misa less annoying and I hope they don't have that twist where Near takes over. The anime kind of sucked after L died, so hopefully if he dies in the movie they wrap things up quicker than in the anime

Outside of Ryuk, all the other characters don't really seem like they are anywhere near the same character as they were in the anime.

Light and Misa apparantly realizing they are bad guys. L being confrontational in public. Light creating big scenes of destruction.

That looks...pretty bad, but I'm morbidly curious so I'll end up watching it anyway. It being on Netflix is the best thing for it because there's no way it wouldn't be a flop as a theatrical release.

It's baffling to me that that they didn't just make it a series, though.

It looks great. Light doesnt seem like such a tool. Misa seems tolerable.

Dafoe looks fantastic.

And its a movie so I hope they skip season 2. If they end it with L's and squeeze in Lights death it'd be great.

No, I'm saying if you want the original then just...read or watch the original. I'm not averse to something purely because it's different, and I think much of the negative criticism for this is on the basis that it has different elements to the original.

Here's the thing. If this was the first adaption of the manga then I'd be with you. I'd say it was a terrible travesty and they're doing it no justice. But it's not. We've already had a really spectacular anime adaption and two japanese films. It's not lacking for faithful adaptions.

So I say let them try something new with this. If it sucks you have all the other shit to watch.

Reminder that "trying something new" is exactly why comic books have so successfully rehashed the same stories again and again and again. There's basically nothing that's sacred in the comic book world except maybe "uncle ben stays dead", and hell...even that's not all that sacred anymore.
