You should try it, it's different from most anime. It's mostly a realistic story except for the death note. No silly fights. Also try one called Monster. That one is even more realistic. About a doctor hunting down a serial killer

Don't have to give it a chance to know the trailer is trash and judge it for that. If they can't convey the characters right even with that small glimpse, why "give it a chance"?

It's a reimagining of the series. Some elements will change. Its not supposed to be an exact replica. Just because it's different doesn't mean it's automatically bad. It'd be boring to see the exact same thing just in live action. If you want to watch the original story, then by all means just rewatch the anime.

I'm actually curious to see how the final movie is. It actually looks like it can be good.

No actually, if it's bad I won't care because I have the manga and anime to go back to. I'm 99% sure it won't come close to the quality of either, so you couldn't be further from the truth.

And funny how you try to pull the confirmation bias argument when it's pretty clear that seems to be the case for you. You've seen 2 minutes of an ~hour and a half movie and apparently you're able to properly critique the characters. That logic is abysmal no matter how you spin it. Especially based on how definitive some of your comments were like saying they're nothing like their counterparts when we haven't seen much at all.

I think I should be asking you that. Are you seriously that daft? He said the "ONLY" thing the entire movie has in common with the anime is the character names. Tell me how the fuck anyone is supposed to ascertain that from a 2 minute trailer of a ~90+ movie. I'm sure as hell waiting to see what you pull out of your ass to explain this one.

Death Note has the status it has because it was a really good psychological thriller, and the nature of the characters of Light and L. This westernized garbage is nothing more than a goofy b-movie horror flick of sorts. American directors seem to have this thing for taking too many liberties with IPs they get a license to so they can make it "theirs". Because they're so high on themselves they think they can fix something that isn't broken, in their minds they're making "an even better version". Like those god awful bayformers movies.

Whoevers in charge of making this movie likely hasn't watched death note, and if they did, they really didn't get it at all.

How do you know it's not a psychological thriller? And we don't know how their characters interact. We only see a few scenes. We see L on the phone telling him he's not getting away with it (and the candy is there, he still has his sweet tooth), and we see them sitting in what looks like a diner talking almost civilly (which seems to say they could be working together just like in the anime, could be the diner scene from the anime). L may not be as quiet and distant as he was in the anime, but his quirks still seem to be there and there's nothing to say he's not a genius detective.

Same with Light. Nothing to show he's not still a genius. It looks like he got jumped in the street which may be a motivation for him more than just boredom. But the duel of wits will almost certainly still be a thing. To top it all off, Misa actually looks like a tolerable character this time around.

I'm not saying it's going to be good or bad. I'm just saying I'm not going to completely write it off based off a two minute trailer and because it's not exactly like it is in the anime. I'm actually curious to see how it turns out.

Could be a reference to the detectives actively trying to hunt them down, probably telling Misa that they have to plan their killings more carefully from now on. This is something Light in the anime understood as well.

True. But Kira was kind of an official name as well. And like you said it's not really a japanese word either so it's not like the japanese were using an actual japanese term for the word killer as a name which would be weird. it kind of distances itself from the actual word "Killer" which would be kind of weird seeing people worshipping in front of candles literally spelling "Killer". It's not a real word in either language but I think both kind of get the meaning behind it and it just sounds better as a name, so I don't really see the need to change it

you could simply say why i'm wrong. but the actual japanese word for killer is not kira. it's how they pronounce the english word, and i'm guessing their reasoning for using that was to find a name for the entity that had something to do with killing rather than using a literal word in their language.

The anime L was weird looking without a hood and mask on. You could tell just by his appearance he was odd before he even spoke. That's the eccentric presence I want to see for the character.

Its not because he is black, its because they completely messed up his personality. Hes not this calm, deep thinker. And he would never give a speech in front of a crowd. He would stay as far away from crowds as possible. At the most he would get Watari to get out the laptop and he'll speak through that with the L symbol instead of his own face.

I agree. If you watch this trailer as if this movie existed in a vacuum, you'd have to say it looks pretty good.

If I was watching it in the vacuum I'd be wondering why the hell the lead detective is wearing a hood and a mask. Granted, I'm still wondering that, but at least with the original series as context I can justify it with "L is a weird dude."

Because if you change personalities, you might as well give them different names and then the plot and change everything else. The only constant would be the book and maybe use a different shinigami too.

It would still be death note but set in a different universe and a different location.

Instead of doing a half assed job at adapting the original death note story and use white and black english speaking people.
