How is Chrono Trigger not at 80-90%?

Breath of Fire - Solid, but the weakest in the entire series
DKC2 - The first game is included, so I understand that the superior sequel is missing for variety's sake
FFII - FFIII is included, so same deal as with DKC2
Harvest Moon - Would have been nice, but it's not as great as the rest of the games listed
Killer Instinct - Same as HM
NBA Jam - Same as HM
Ogre Battle - Would have been nice, but it's much more niche then the rest of the list
Secret of Evermore - Same as OB
SM All-Stars - These are NES games, no need to include them at the expense of losing something else

Top omissions:

1. Chrono Trigger
2. Chrono Trigger
3. Chrono Trigger
4. Chrono Trigger
5. Chrono Trigger
6. DKC2
7. FFIV
8. Ogre Battle
9. Harvest Moon
10. Anything from Quintet

Not that it matters THAT much. I have other ways to play all of the above and many more. But given the inclusion of FFVI, Secret of Mana, and Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger just plain feels missing.

Maybe I'm the only one, but I think the biggest omission was Super Bomberman 2. I'm fine with CT not being on there since it's been re-released before. They largely covered all the genres and the biggest titles, but there isn't really a party game on there. Bomberman was the reason anybody bought a multitap in the first place, and as a bonus you can play 3 player on Secret of Mana (although the Sprite is hilariously OP).

https://www.theverge.com/2017/6/26/15874154/nintendo-snes-classic-edition-release-date-price-announced

Nintendo has revealed details for the SNES Classic. The standalone mini console will feature 21 games, including Super Mario World, Earthbound, Super Mario Kart, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. But the most surprising inclusion is Star Fox 2, the unreleased sequel to the original Star Fox for SNES.

The Super NES Classic Edition will launch on September 29th for $79.99. Like its predecessor the NES Classic, it will allow players to easily play retro games on high-definition televisions, thanks to an HDMI connection.

The full list of games included on the SNES Classic follows:

Contra III: The Alien Wars
Donkey Kong Country
EarthBound
Final Fantasy III
F-ZERO
Kirby Super Star
Kirby’s Dream Course
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Mega Man X
Secret of Mana
Star Fox
Star Fox 2
Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
Super Castlevania IV
Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Super Mario World
Super Metroid
Super Punch-Out!!
Yoshi’s Island

The Super NES Classic is Nintendo’s follow-up to the NES Classic, which launched in fall 2016. The console was notoriously difficult to find due to limited stock, and was discontinued earlier this year.

I own:
Games i bought from 2012 to now:
Mario rpg ($54 Birck and mortar store)
Secret of mana ($50 Ebay)
Yoshies Island ($30 Ebay)
Donkey Kong Country ($14 Brick and Mortar store). I actually had to buy this game twice since the first cart had battery problems. So I spent $30 on this game.
Total spent: $164.
Cost of SNES portable: $80
Would have saved: $84

On the subject of NES Classic having more games, how many of those were shitty filler games? I mean, those arcade(-style) games are classics, but they've been released in pretty much every form imaginable. Those games don't add any real value - they put some of them in other games as Easter eggs FFS. Take away Donkey Kong, DK Jr., Pac-Man, Balloon Fight, Ice Climber, Excitebike, Mario Bros. and Galaga and then you're left with only 22 games.

Honestly I'm not too butthurt about missing out on the NES classic because yeah those games were fun at the time but they don't hold up all that well. The SNES Classic however, I will be VERY butthurt if I can't get one... Nintendo says they are making significantly more of them, but who's to say even that will be enough? I hate to have to camp out for one of these but I guess I might have to in order to get one...

Just something to note for all the people complaining about the lack of Chono Trigger, these are the current number of games grouped by developers:

1st Party: 13 (Donkey Kong Country is technically 1st party since Nintendo had an exclusive deal with Rare at the time).

Square: 3 (Granted, one of them is 2nd party)
Capcom: 3
Konami: 2

2nd and 3rd party games: 8

For comparison sake, that is a higher 2nd and 3rd party ratio then the NES Classic, any of the Atari Flashbacks, or the Sega Genesis equivalents.

It's a good list of games if you have none of them already, but I already have six of them in their Game Boy Advance or DS versions. Still, it might be good to play the five games for which I have the Game Boy Advance versions with normal controls, better music, and bigger views; there are at least five games on the list that I've never played that I probably should play to see what they're about; and some of the others would probably be good to play though too hard for me to get far in. So maybe I should get this, but I'm not going to get it on the first day or anything.

tbh, since the shoulder buttons on my gba-sp are pretty much dead (both of them, although I could take it apart to try cleaning it), I can't even play LttP on my gba. Granted, LttP was an enhanced port so in some ways it's strictly superior.

Really, dude? I'm sure that, while they were already redesigning the hardware for release, it would have been so much harder to add two more ports to the thing.

It wouldn't. You know that. I know that. I think it's reasonable to be a little disappointed that what is likely the most popular - or at least well-known - 4 player game on the console is not featured on a re-release that features most of the most popular - or at least well-known - games on the console.

I think Nintendo makes a lot of indefensible design decisions, but this isn't one of them. Sure, four-player would be nice, but it's kind of a ridiculous thing to ask of this console. For one thing, adding two more ports would kill the aesthetic, and they're trying to make this look as close to the real thing as possible. You could solve that by making the two ports strictly cosmetic and using wireless controllers, but that's a different argument. They should do that anyway, even if they just keep it 2 players max.

How does the multitap work anyway? I'm not familiar with it, but if they would have to emulate that to some degree I could see why they wouldn't bother.

And the point of these things is to capture the more essential elements of the console. Four-player support wasn't a big part of that, and many of the target audience probably doesn't even know the SNES had it. I looked at the list of four-player games and most of them suck. Why would they bother adding that for probably one game that doesn't even have strong associations with SNES? Bomberman is too ubiquitous. Adding that would just leave more people wondering about why other games got left out, and it's a lot to ask of consumers to get two extra controllers to play an okay game they could easily get the jist of on another system. It's like complaining that they didn't have Tetris on the NES Classic.

That's fair enough. I really would have loved it though, as it's one of the three or so games I routinely come back to play, and given its relative unique-ness compared to the rest of the bundle I had hope that it would have snuck in there. The Square RPGs have been remade in other places, and I'm already lucky enough to own both a CT and an Ogre Battle cart...at least there's Bomberman '94.
